hi, please read. this is about the topic of portraying taboo in fiction, particularly in nsfw content. i'm still learning how to articulate my thoughts but it was important to me to be open about this.

i want to voice my stance regarding the portrayal of taboo topics in fiction. please keep in mind that this is a very small and generalized piece of my opinions regarding this topic and there will always be more unspoken nuances that are not touched on in a single social media post.

by taboo, i explicitly mean topics like abuse, grooming, incest, etc. i have my own personal boundaries but i am against the rhetoric that demonizes all forms of sexualizing/fetishizing taboo topics in fiction without a consideration of nuance.

the sexualization of certain topics has the capacity to be productive. for a lot of people, being able to engage in taboo in a pleasurable way (that of course does not perpetuate real harm) in a safe environment is how oppressed+marginalized people reclaim power in a system that strips them of it, as well as explore these systems in a discursive manner (such as through cnc, which is the most glaring example). am i saying that every single person engaging in bdsm/taboo fiction actively intends to deconstruct dominant systems, no, not necessarily. you can be wholly ignorant to real world implications, but, allowing discussion and exploration in these spaces can lead to education. nothing is learned by sweeping dark topics under the rug, or treating it like glass to the point where the only allowed production of content about these things has to be clean/sanitized.

bdsm and the engagement with taboo topics in fiction cannot be divorced from real world implications (see: most bdsm scenes wouldn't exist if not for historical and real hierarchies of power), but they should not be automatically considered All harmful perpetuations/repetitions of existing cycles. to eroticize/add pleasure to the controversial in fantasy is already a form of rebellion if the people practicing Are politically aware (and sometimes, it is a form of rebellion/queering the space even pre-awareness).

$are there bad examples of people who are irresponsibly fetishizing atrocities / doing these practices in bad faith? absolutely, but they are not representative of every single person who partakes in this. using bad examples as the frontline example of a community is a form of regulation, specifically sexual regulation, which targets marginalized groups first and foremost. it's not productive to treat people who choose to engage with taboo topics in unconventional ways as a monolith, that "oh but what if these people are actually predators" well then those people are bad representatives of the community. that very thought process Is mobilizing disgust rhetoric the same way it's historically done without deeper thought. do i think there are extreme cases and very terrible people in these spaces, of course i do. but i think that trying to act as if you can tell what someone's morals are based on a small fraction of the fictional content that they produce is a very parasocial mindset. there will be people who should be validly critiqued because their work is blatantly harmful, but those are obvious cases. seeing a drawing of sexual incest in the wild and thinking you are able to point at the creator and know their real life morals is parasocial.$

a lot of people are aware of the implications of their work. a lot of people are victims of the very thing they're portraying. and a lot of the time, it's impossible to know if they're not explicitly open about it. intention and Who the creator is matters, but you cannot determine this with just a surface level judgement. i am not excusing everyone who portrays taboo topics in their work, including myself, from criticism, and there is discussion to be had in the dissemination of these things in public spaces, but my point is that there is importance in holding space for nuance.

please have grace and open mindedness in this political climate. there is always so much more to have a conversation about/deconstruct and you should always be questioning your preconceived notions.

i am by no means a source of education, and i am mainly making this post to curate my own space. this is a very broad stroke of this topic and you should seek out your own educational resources on the topic of fetish/sexual regulation if you wish. thank you for reading.
