so i just discovered that the bay area's clipper system mostly uses offline terminals that trust your phone / clipper card to report an accurate balance, and only sync up to the internet to verify about once a week. and you know what that means.

you may not like it, but this is the platonic ideal of rust code

28 lines of extremely dense rust code. All white space has been deleted except for 2-column tab indentation. most variables are one or two letters, and many items from the standard library have been abbreviated to the same length. multiple statements appear on the same line, and often loops appear on the same line as other code. the file name is “bib/main.rs”.

build scripts really suck. also cargo is not extensible and it’s very hard to wrap in a reliable way. i wrote up some ideas a few weeks ago, i should turn them into a blog poet

here is the thing i would build instead of cargo:
- start by importing `cargo metadata` from Cargo.toml, so that 80% of builds can still be declarative.
- have a FUSE filesystem that tracks reads and writes. for platforms that don't support FUSE, fall back to .d files. record these in a way similar to `tup`. notice and rebuild when the accessed files change. if processes are interrupted, delete all the artifacts they created in the latest (partial) run (this also fixes "ctrl-c breaks incremental linking sometimes").
- extend the tup model to system dependencies by strace-ing all spawned processes. rebuild if a system dependency changes.
- disallow setting `-l` and `-L`; instead require that build scripts print the path to all shared objects they want to link. rebuild if any of those change.
- expose all this info with a nexttest-like query language. for example RA could ask "all used files" cheaply (because it's cached from the previous build). this would be the main interface for build scripts; they could say "give me the registered C compiler for this target" using the same query language as external processes.
- build in a dumb executor (something like what cargo has today). have a plugin (or builtin) that uses the query language to export to .ninja. do the cmake thing where ninja automatically recreates its files if it needs to.

me in a leather jacket and jeans. my hair is pulled back. i look severe; but one corner of my mouth is turned up. my right hand is taking a selfie and the left is holding my car keys. in the background is a tv and shaded window.

the Mask Maker from hollow knight. it's a long, spindly anthropomorphoid bug wearing a green cloak that covers most of its body. it holds a brush in either hand, poised just above a table, upon which rests a half-finished mask. to the side are masks of all shapes and sizes, some of which belong to characters elsewhere in the game. it is in a cavern brightly lit with hanging lanterns. in the background, barely visible because the camera is so out of focus, are many more masks hanging.

this is the version of the mask maker that appears after you have "unmasked" it, although it may have yet more masks underneath.

this was the first photo i saw myself in before that it always felt like a costume

me in a black long sleeved v-neck with long sleeves and a large blue tote bag. i’m wearing an asymmetric black dress, black pennyloafers, and yellow socks. my hair is just above my shoulders and my hands are a blur as i lean back against the wall of a building decorated to look like the outside of a barn. the whole thing is lit by a dim yellow overhead lamp.
