ELIMESE

heit.

stockades had been erected along the boundaries between Romans and barbarians to obstruct crossing into the Roman Empire Here, at the Outer Limes, the palisade was built at 160 AD along with watchtowers.
At about 200 AD a wall and a ditch were constrated either in addition to or as a acement of the weeden barter.
The palside consisted of tree trunks split in? half, which were embedded in a trench about 40 cm wide and 1, m deep. Their smooth sides faced outwards - against the Germanic ter-ritones. Crossbeams on the inside connected several posts, so that none could be pulled out on its own.
During this period and on many other occasi ons also, in many regions whece the barbari-ns are held back not by ryels but by artificial barriers, Hadrian shut them off by means of high stakes planted deep in the ground and fastened together in the manner of a palisade?

And the last stop of the tour, the charming Gent, or possibly Ghent. Going up the Belfry costs €13, spend your money instead on the Castle of the Counts. Go round a corner, over the canal, past the merchant houses and there’s a castle straight out of a medieval drama. Wonderful.
