My memory of the "Worse is Better" essay (dreamsongs.com/WorseIsBetter.html) keeps running through my head these days. Amusingly, it was originally written in the context of a previous AI bubble. LLMs are clearly the "worse" in this round, and I'm wishing that more people cared about […]

#Kagi Translate is so much better than Google Translate. So much more detail and explanation of what the text might have meant depending on the context.
Kagi Translate, with a French input of "cent chemins s'emmélaient"

The primary English translation is "a hundred paths were tangled together"

It also says:

Wordplay - The French word ‘cent’ (hundred) is a homophone for 'sans' (without), creating an auditory double meaning between 'a
hundred paths' and 'pathless'.

A literal and descriptive translation that uses the past continuous
tense to depict a state of confusion or physical intertwining.

Alternative translations:
* a hundred paths intertwined
* a hundred paths crisscrossed
* a hundred paths became a tangled
mess
* a hundred paths wound together
* a hundred paths were snarled

It allows changing the "Poetic or Literary Style":
Adjust the imagery to be more evocative or abstract ...Google Translate with a French input of "cent chemins s'emmélaient"

It asks "Did you mean: cent chemins s'emmélent"

It gives an English translation of "a hundred paths become entangled" and nothing else.

Stopping the system fans to heat up the system to shift clock phase by a few femtoseconds is one of the less hinged ideas I’ve seen come out of CERN lol. (AFAIU this was an experiment for a software retrofit to hardware otherwise incapable of such adjustments)
Slide with LHCb logo reading “Phase stabilization under hardware constraints
Using the server internal fans to heat up and cool down the FPGA
in order to shift the phase and stabilize it within a Std Dev of 1 ps.”. A larger text block follows, next to a graph showing clock phase against system temperature. The larger text block reads:

Python script running a PID algorithm
to read the phases and control the
fans.
At the left I set the script to different
phase setpoints. (60, 70, 80 ps)
The plateau in the middle is the phase
shifter keeping the phase at 80ps
even when the AC started oscillating
the temperature up to 3C pk-pk.
At the right end I turned off the
script, which caused the phase to
start shifting with the temperature
again.
