Slowly removing lawn, replacing with native plants. My one small step for wildlife, climate, anxiety. Reading, learning to play the ukelele, front porch birding and nature observing. Trying to stay informed but not stressed out.

You could also get folding maps at the gas station. While the attendant filled your gas tank and cleaned the car windows, you could go inside and get a map.

Well, I won’t have your experience but I expect to learn some meaningful things as I read.

Thanks for the recommendation; I just borrowed The Berry Pickers from the library.

I’m old now, but your haiku brought back a memory of sitting on my grandmother’s lap on the porch rocking chair, as her hands on my legs kept time with the motion. Thank you.

I guess many people aren’t old enough to remember smoggy cities and acid rain, but Trump is old enough. Sickening, literally and figuratively.

Use them up and throw them away. What an awful country we have become.

The blue mist plants spread around my Maryland garden, preferring the wet area but quite happy anywhere. It does better in dry areas than great blue lobelia.

Thrilling! I saw one years ago in our backyard. It’s good to know they’re still around.

Public libraries are fighting book bans, funding cuts, political interference, and harassment of librarians. Meanwhile, publishers are worried that libraries are lending too many ebooks. This week’s newsletter: Read the Room. roncharles.substack.com/p/libraries-...

That’s definitely an on-going problem in the DC suburbs too.

I’ve done some of that too. 😑 Happily, though, some plants have been relocating themselves to wetter areas, like Great Blue Lobelia. This year it’s done well all over because we’ve had consistent summer rain, but other years it has died before it blooms.

That looks great, Kristi. My goldenrod grows much taller than everything else and looks ridiculous, sticking up here and there. Also, the showy goldenrod has rust and looks awful. I’ve got to dig it out, which isn’t easy.

My tiny garden produced about half that many green beans. For dinner last night, my husband and I each had three. ☺️ I have hopes for more beans but, alas, blight and squirrels have decimated the tomatoes.

Mine didn’t even come up. I’ve noticed on walks that much of the Common Milkweed didn’t bloom. Maybe the early heat and then the late freeze we had in this area is the reason. 😕

My garden looks a lot like your garden: lots of rudbeckia. Thinking about a few years from now, I’m wondering if the rudbeckia will have taken over my entire garden. I imagine the obedient plant will hold its own, but I’m not sure about everything else. 🤷🏼

We had one near us not far from Rockville some years ago. It was building a dam but moved on; at least I hope that’s why we only saw it once.
