The tragedy is that American leaders don’t even believe anymore in the free market ideology that China defied. But they can’t give up the grudge. They would rather take us to war than admit they were wrong. /3

Diplomacy would become possible again if we recognized that US–China conflict was driven by a system that just wasn’t practical rather than by the perfidy of either side. We could start talking about how to reform the global economy so it works for North and South alike. 2/

In DC you spend your whole life packaging shallow talking points for a wide audience. Even then people outside DC never bought into China conflict. Tech figures haven’t honed that skill of disguising the cynical manipulation of ideas, so the whole scam is out in the open.

The campaign to discredit China’s lending in the Global South worked because Americans don’t know the US record is so similar. But it won’t have the same effect when everyone has already experienced these same supposedly Chinese abuses at the hands of the US tech companies.

The core problem with Biden foreign policy was its hardening of geopolitical blocs. Rejecting a global reform agenda to open positive-sum possibilities, they drove up geopolitical pressures in all regions. These people must never return to power, but so too the whole approach.

Cold War liberals arming US allies were often uncomfortable with the torture and mass murder. They accepted complicity to maintain geopolitical blocs. Likewise the Biden people took part in endless atrocities in Gaza because they refused peace with Iran. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

We could change the rules to diffuse tech broadly, particularly to the Global South, in order to reduce hierarchy and expand growth and development. Or we could throw out the rules, say it’s might makes right—we’ll squeeze what we can from China but even more from those less powerful. 4/

Jake Werner @jwdwerner.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
We could admit the old tech hoarding rules were an obstacle to growth and development, maintaining an unjust hierarchy. Or we could scapegoat China for these systemic problems. 3/

Jake Werner @jwdwerner.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Neoliberal globalization disintegrated, of course, but it’s also self-serving. When rich countries were on top, they needed reasons to hoard tech. They’re not on top anymore, so they need reasons to diffuse tech. But where do we take that? One path is healthy, the other is destructive. 2/

Jake Werner @jwdwerner.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
Glad to see this getting attention. But where we take it makes a world of difference. The point isn’t new: I’ve been making it for a decade, and that was based on heterodox pol econ literature of the 80s–90s. But it was inadmissible under neoliberal hegemony. Why the change? 1/

Private equity’s move into youth sports brings some truths home
Investments create benefits but also lead to higher costs and risk of inequality
010
Jake Werner @jwdwerner.bsky.social · 25/06/2026
A few years ago the distinction between productive and speculative investment was coming back, but serving Biden’s geopolitical conflict. Rackets like below are everywhere now. Let’s land productive vs predatory investment as the distinction—it’s about human needs not international domination.
Text from an FT column by Sujeet Indap, 2026.06.23:

“For some of my cold-blooded business school classmates, their nascent scepticism about private equity comes from perhaps an unlikely source: the Wall Street takeover of the sports their kids play.

“To support their children in their athletic endeavours, they have faced new and escalating costs for everything from fancy uniforms to being pushed towards video recordings of games, the latter costing parents hundreds of dollars when they could just use their own iPhones. Parents tell stories of being charged to watch games, to have their child try out for teams or pay for parking at matches.”

The Supreme Court ALSO gives Trump another pass on racism, declaring that his horrific and bigoted comments against Haitians are actually not evidence of racism and that the plaintiffs cannot show evidence of racial bias, essentially plugging their ears and letting Trump spew filth as policy.
The Court assumes for the sake of argument that heightened scrutiny applies and that it must determine whether a “discriminatory purpose [was] a motivating factor in the decision” to terminate Haiti’s TPS
designation, Arlington Heights v. Metropolitan Housing Development
Corp., 429 U. S. 252, 265–266. Because application of that standard
calls for consideration of the context in which a challenged statement
was made, id., at 267–268, the immigration context is an important
factor.
None of the cited statements by either the President or the Secretary
was overtly racial, and in substance all expressed policy views that
could rest on race-neutral justifications. Viewing all the relevant evidence, Miot respondents are unlikely to prove that race was a motivating factor in the decision to terminate Haiti’s TPS designation, and it
follows that they are not entitled to interim relief on their equal protection claim. Pp. 20–24

BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules 6-3 in favor of the Trump admin on Temporary Protected Status, blocking the lawsuit on jurisdictional grounds, allowing DHS to strip over 350,000 people of legal status even though they utterly failed to follow the required legal procedures.
MULLIN v. DOE
Syllabus
that the termination of Haiti’s TPS designation violated the constitutional right to equal protection because it was motivated by race. The
District Court granted interim relief, and a divided D. C. Circuit panel
declined to issue a stay. The Government sought a stay and a writ of
certiorari before judgment in both cases. This Court granted review,
consolidated the cases, and deferred ruling on the stay applications.
Held:
1. The TPS statute bars judicial review of non-constitutional claims.
Pp. 12–18.
(a) Section 1254a(b)(5)(A) provides that “[t]here is no judicial review
of any determination of the [Secretary of Homeland Security] with respect to the designation, or termination or extension of a designation,
of a foreign state.” The term “determination” may mean either an individual decision or the process leading to a decision. Under either
understanding, §1254a(b)(5)(A) bars all of respondents’ non-constitutional claims. Further, the phrase “with respect to” “generally has a
broadening effect, ensuring that the scope of a provision covers not
only its subject but also matters relating to that subject.” Patel v. Garland, 596 U. S. 328, 339 (internal quotation marks omitted). Pp. 12–
