It's true. When we say "talented", we are really pointing to a mix of skilled and maybe easy learner. But since each lived life is different, could be a mix of many factors leading to talent. There are clearly people who learn fast and young and blow people away. But anyone can cook, you know?

Here's a goofy sketch of ole Hobgoblin himself. Since ASM 238 was my entry to reading comics and keeping up with them, he's kind of special to me. Even though I don't remember jack shit about him. I enjoyed that story arc and their first handful of battles were pretty epic.

Currently reading The Birth of Kitaro by Shigeru Mizuki. This is a nice little Drawn & Quarterly edition. Don't worry about that guy on the cover. So far, he seems harmless. Mizuki's cartooning is enchanting.

Sometimes I like to draw Hulk. Just a simple muscle guy who is always angry. This drawing isn't my fave, but it does remind me strongly of my own art from when I was young. I guess this inking mode is my "natural" way of drawing. Unrefined, a bit sloppy, not much planning. No hesitation.

Here's an example of a terrible old boomer way of thinking. As if a candidate smoking a brisket at the interview is any indication whatsoever of their skills and work ethic. I'd argue it takes great skill and dedication to smoke meat at the interview. I'd hire on the spot, personally.

I do not know the context here, so I'm reacting purely from experience. Where I work, if you came into the interview carrying coffee it would be a huge negative. I personally don't care. But I know the employer would see it as sloppy, like the candidate didn't give a fuck. Workplace cultures vary.

Bunch of shit I've been drawing lately. I really want to draw more comics, but I struggle to find the right ideas to keep me motivated long enough to finish them. I know myself and if I don't get in and get out quickly, then I probably won't finish the work. It's a lifelong struggle.

The file date for this drawing is 24 years ago. I remember drawing it. I used a Mars brush pen, felt. There was something in this moment where my drawing approach completely changed forever. Before this, I was scritchy and stiff.

I like the honesty of comix that aren't merely pushing buttons for a reaction. The genuine story of two eggs, for example, is pure and honest and from the heart.

"He kept telling himself the letter had to go. He almost believed it." I'm no painter. I don't think I've seriously tried my hand at it in 30 years. Inks, washes, and markers are where I live. This sketch is about 75% watercolor, 25% ink wash.
