What happens after a very, very long dry spell and then steady light rain? Yard mushrooms! Here are two varieties we found on our neighborhood walk.

I was at the library yesterday and realized that I'm very grateful for eBooks when it comes to hardcovers that are well over 500 pages. My wrists just can't take it anymore.

I'm so very excited about my library run today! How will I ever choose which book to open first?!? Wickhills by @premeemohamed.com, Daggerbound by @tkingfisher.com, and A Long and Speaking Silence by @nghivo.bsky.social. Spoiled for choice I am.

@sarahreesbrennan.bsky.social Every time I think I know where the story is headed, there's a new twist. This is the second *literal* cliffhanger, and yet I don't feel cheated by it at the end. This story has me beaten into submission - humbly waiting for the next book, no idea where it will take me.
Book cover of All Hail Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan. Wicked looking emperor in armor, blue cape, and boots, slouched on a throne of snakes, holding a sword out to his side with the point on the ground. Title outlined in highlighter green.

We got good news about our foster Shiner in the same week we celebrated one year of fostering him and his 11th birthday. At long last he is heartworm negative! He'll need another test in 3 months to confirm, but yay Shiner!

Found on the dog walk - pretty purple/pink flowers
Wee little five-pointed star shaped pink/purple bloom. Very pretty - no idea what it is. I'm not flower literate. Might even be a weed, but it's a pretty one. I have no idea what kind of flower this is but they look like little pink-purple fireworks explosions with a white center.

I've been on a bit of a science fiction kick lately. 1. Platform Decay by Martha Wells (audiobook, because that stretches out my enjoyment, otherwise I'll devour it in one day, plus Kevin R. Free is an excellent reader). Made me want to reread the whole series again.

We've been working with Palmer on being less reactive to other dogs on leash. We went for a trial run at an art fair held in a local park, and he did great! Calmly meeting people and other dogs. Here he is during a water and snack break by a pond. He was very interested in the ducks and swans.

Reading my bookshelves: The Squirrel on the Train by Kevin Hearne and North Continent Ribbon by Ursula Whitcher. Two novella-length books, one is a fun fantasy mystery with a dog point of view, and the other is a set of loosely linked science fiction stories that are just brilliant.
Two book covers. On the left is The Squirrel on the Train by Kevin Hearne. The cover is in blues and tans and features a somewhat abstract train station with two dogs running out in front of a train towards the viewer, chased by a man. On the right is North Continent Ribbon by Ursula Whitcher. The cover is in blues, greens, and white with the title in orange. It features a person standing on a hill facing a mountain valley with a lake, birds, trees, and buildings. One building is quite tall and may be the base of a space elevator.

Two books I had holds on in this library run - Death in the Palace by Barbara Hambly, fourth in a historical mystery series set in 1920s Hollywood. This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews @ilonaandrews.bsky.social , start of a new fantasy series. Excited for both!
Two hardcover library books - a smaller, thinner book on the left and a larger, thicker book on the right. Left - Death in the Palace by Barbara Hambly. Cover has a 1920s movie star posing in a gold dress in front of a red curtain with a movie camera and stage light flanking her. Right - This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews. Cover has the title in the middle in a dark blue circle, a long-necked bird curved around it, and a tower on the other side topped with what looks like petals. Blues and golds, and a moon and stone-buildings in the background.

We have an overnight foster guest - Fantasma, who after much time & effort was caught as a stray in south Texas. She was not happy being at the vet, so we picked her up for the weekend. She'll go to a longer term foster home tomorrow. She's tiny, a little shy, and a master counter surfer.
Fantasma, a very small 43 pound (about 19 kg) black female greyhound - finally caught as a stray after much effort. Red collar and a yellow one that has a GPS tracker. She's standing on a rug with ears perked and looking very interested in what's going on. Very small black greyhound curled up on a dog bed, looking very unimpressed with the world. She has two collars on - a red one and a yellow one that has a GPS tracker on it - protective measure since she was a skittish stray.

Can't forget the digital library selections - two gothic horror books sandwiching an audiobook that's gaslamp fantasy/romance/mystery. Not Flesh Nor Feathers by @cheriepriest.com. The Prince of Secrets by A.J. Lancaster. Wolf Worm by @tkingfisher.com.
Three book covers. Not Flesh Nor Feathers by Cherie Priest - a dark hillside with water in the foreground, empty sets of clothing standing up as if occupied, everything rimmed in firelight - spooky! The Prince of Stariel by A.J. Lancaster - second in the fantasy Stariel series, a stylized manor house at the bottom with tea cups, winter plants, and tophats with bowties framing the sides, all in blue with accents of white and red with the title in a ribbony font that curls around. Wolf Worm by T. Kingfisher - black cover with bold white title twined through with a flowering vine that looks like it's budding insects and the roots look like red veins - gothic horror.

Art by flaroh illustration. March's illustration is of Artemis with her hounds in an ornate portrait scene. Ribbons embellish her bow, arrow, and dog's collars, and she wears a thin scarf at her neck, all of which blow away from the direction of the arrow's path. The palette is almost entirely blue, apart from her skin and the dog's collars, which are all peach.

Anna would absolutely not let the other boys share a bed with her - and I'm actually surprised she is allowing Squirt to share with only a token protest. A chilly spring day will do that to a gal I guess.

I've been on a non-fiction reading kick lately and very highly recommend all three of these books as enlightening, well researched, and infuriating but somewhat hopeful. @johngreensbluesky.bsky.social, @johnhiggs.bsky.social, @alexclapp.bsky.social
A trio of non-fiction book covers: Everything Is Tuberculosis by John Green - bright yellow with a magnified orange circle of tuberculosis bacteria.
