Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I’ve read reports saying the NYT Games page/site announced in Feb ‘26 that it would start reusing solution words occasionally. I can neither confirm nor deny the veracity of said reports. 000
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I think the Wordle editor might be having a bit of a personal and professional crisis. After the PSHAW imbroglio, management pushed her face and name into social media – but the abuse continued. Now, I suspect she’s making passive-hostile word choices. 110
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Okay, comrade – stay out of that rabbit hole for the sake of your sanity. I poked my head in it and came out reeling. I’ll explain more soon. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Hmm, I see two different Fontana logos there. I wonder if the standard logo changed at some point, or if there were variant versions for use on white and black backgrounds. 100
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 03/10/2026I don’t see it either, Judy. Something ‘clicked’ – meaning Billy suddenly understood something about the robbery that he hadn’t seen before. I don’t know what that knowledge was, or how it arrived; I don’t know what it might signify about Billy, or his flaws or his fate, or the wide open world. 000
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 03/10/2026My dad (Jack) liked everything Eastwood was in. He generally appreciated any movie with cowboys or cops. One time, I found him watching ‘Heat’ and he was right into it. Another time he was watching ‘Pulp Fiction’ and he totally got the cartoon gangster vibe. I wish I’d got ‘Reservoir Dogs’ for him. 000
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 03/10/2026This game is challenging and satisfying. Unfortunately, you need to be fluent in USAish, not just English, to see many of the solutions take shape. 020
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I liked the ride, but I do not know where it took us. 110
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I must watch this again soon. I saw it on late-night TV as a teenager and it was one of the first times I noticed the craft in a movie: writing, photography, scenery, indoor styling, soundtrack. I could see tgat experts had put this together. 111

Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The Wallabies’ back line is failing to deal with the rush defence and the ball is going down in panicked passes. It’s been happening for the last half-dozen Boks tests and there’s no answer in sight. #ausvrsa 000
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 27/09/2026The penalty against Australia that led to the Boks’ try was bizarre. There was no offence. The whistle-happy ref could wreck this match. #ausvrsa 010

Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Someone might chime in here to point out that it’s possible to get iMessages relayed to an Android phone. It can be done, but the Android users will first need to create an Apple user account. They don’t need an iPhone, but they’ll need an Apple account to log into – just like with every IM service. 020
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026As an iPhone user, if you dislike exchanging unencrypted SMS texts with your Android-phone friends, you have lots of options for secure IM. WhatsApp is a popular one. However, iMessage IM via the Messages app is not one of those options. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Coming back to the matter of alleged enshittification, the important point is that Apple has never provided the iMessage service or the Messages app to Android phone owners. Enshittification is a degraded user experience; Android phone owners have *no* Messages user experience, not a degraded one. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Since your iPhone can’t send an iMessage over the internet to your Android-phone friends, it uses SMS (once you have enabled SMS in Settings) to direct a text message to their phone number over the phone network. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026This means that if you try to send an iMessage to an Android user, it won’t go anywhere. The Apple servers have no electronic address to deliver it to. Trying to send an encrypted iMessage to a non-Apple customer is like dropping off an unaddressed parcel to a courier company. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’ll repeat the point that iMessage connects Apple account holders. The reason you can’t send encrypted iMessages to Android phone users is not because they lack *iPhones*. It’s because they lack *Apple user accounts*. No AppleID, no iCloud address – they don’t exist in Apple’s database of users. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The Messages app sends and receives two kinds of messages: iMessage, to connect with other Apple account holders, including iPhone users; and SMS, to connect to users of other kinds of phones. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026To use non-Apple IM apps on an iPhone, you just need to install a dedicated app. But as you know, the iPhone comes with Apple’s own messaging app, called Messages. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026On the subject of the iPhone, it might be helpful to note that it’s both a telephone and an internet device. As a telephone, it can send SMS texts. As an internet device, it can run numerous IM services: iMessage, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram…. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Since 2011, Apple has operated an IM service called iMessage. It enables Apple account holders to send encrypted messages to each other. iMessage works when users are logged in with their AppleIDs on desktop computers, laptop computers, iPads and iPhones. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026There have been many popular IM services since the 1980s – IRC, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, Facebook Messenger. In some cases, it has been possible to send messages across different services, but mainly they are closed systems: both users must have accounts on the same service. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Instant Messaging (IM) over the internet works differently. People log in to the service via a website or an app, and the service provides connections to their friends who also use that service. Generally, you can’t exchange IMs with someone who’s not on the same service. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026SMS been around since 1993 and until smartphones arrived circa 2007, it was all we had for mobile messaging. It’s not a secure or encrypted system, but no one cared about that back in the day because our texts were stuff like ‘be there in 5 mins’ and ‘pizza ok for dinner?’ 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026First, SMS – it’s the standard way to send messages between mobile/cell telephones. It works like a phone call: it goes from one phone number to another, via the airwaves and towers. It runs on the phone network, not the internet. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I’m sorry if this comes across as too simplistic and/or too detailed. I’ll try to cover everything, then bring it back to a central point about how every internet Instant Messaging service requires users to have an account to use it. 120
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026My two cents’ worth (not adjusted for inflation) is that ‘Breaking Bad’ has a brilliant first episode. I’ve tried twice to watch the rest of the first season but not made it through the third episode, because it was very, very boring. It may be the greatest show of the century, but I’ll never know. 010
Justin Walsh @juswal.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Either this is fine, subtle satire or you know nothing about internet messaging. I can’t tell! 130
