I'm a fan of the WindowsHModular project (github.com/Leandros/Win...), which solves some of these issues. It also makes sandboxing the windows headers much easier and only using the pieces actually required.

So, what kinda job does one go into in their mid 30s after spending an entire career as a programmer? Looking around, everything even close in salary range obviously requires prior experience or degrees in different fields. I’m under no illusion that I’m badly specced, but where do my skills work?

Given that everyone in and around tech has gone insane, I propose we turn the internet off for a week and all go touch grass.

Are we not all standing on chairs at 3am switching those batteries?! There is no way I’d let that thing beep all night.

I am in absolute awe by the sheer amount of assets shown and what it must take to get all of that on screen. I also deeply regret not owning a console.

The Apple developer site is so good. When you log in it requires a code send by SMS and then gives you a prompt asking if you want to trust this browser. That prompt does nothing, you will still be auto logged out and have to enter the SMS MFA code again. Trillion dollar company!

I also wonder if putting a lot of distance/hierarchy between everyone including the customer isn’t partially to blame. We do become blind to issues that don’t directly affect us and it gets easier to give everything the Excel spreadsheet treatment. But it’s also unavoidable when growing big

Yet the crowd that deluded itself into thinking they are mountain climbers will eagerly tell you that it is in fact you who has taken the crazy pills. I would love to live in a world where the only goal wasn’t “number go up”.

We have a telnet server in our engine that’s used heavily to script/auto test stuff. But it can also run other commands like ‘shader reload X’, which the shader compiler can issue. Just in case you were looking for a way to avoid watching file changes while also throwing out simplicity.

We might have better healthcare on paper, but only so long as you aren’t planning on seeing a doctor. No shade at the doctors here, they are great, there just aren’t enough. I’ve lived here for 8 years and am still on the waitlist for a family doctor.

In hindsight this is blindingly obvious and I feel like an absolute idiot, yet somehow I never considered that this obviously works. Probably common knowledge to everyone already, but I only cosplay as a senior C++ developer so this revelation only just hit me.

I was today years old when I realized that you can specify the overload std::clamp() and co should pick. I've always done something like std::clamp(foo, int16_t(0), int16_t(bar + 1)), but std::clamp<int16_t>(foo, 0, bar) gets rid of all the ugly casts from type promotion.

Takes quite a bit of guts to claim its a-okay to inhale every piece of human content ever made without paying for it and then turn around and cry foul when somebody else distills the resulting product into their own.

It’s also showing everyone that you can get away with it too. Imho a very dangerous lesson to be teaching whoever is coming next. As someone from the outside, who grew up in a world where the US projected a lot of power, it’s also absolutely mind blowing how happily that’s being thrown away.

Sad Vulkan noises. Actually there is an extension that, in theory, allows extracting vendor crash dump data. AMD does not support that feature.

Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 15/07/2026
No shade at AMD (okay maybe a little), but before putting an MCP server into RGD, it’d be real nice to actually make RGD functional. I have not been able to catch one device loss with it, ever. Also the fact that it can’t be embedded like Aftermath for in the field diagnostics isn’t helping either.

Yeah the analogy doesn’t fully work. But there seems to be a general fear of “smaller budget, smaller return”. It’s got to make billions or its just not worth even entertaining. Which means the budget needs to be eye watering high as well.

Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 07/07/2026
This feels similar to Hollywood where the small to mid sized budget comedy has almost gone completely away. It’s only big blockbuster productions and the 80th iteration of the same movie because taking any risk is unacceptable and it has to return $$$.

Tangential question, sorry (loving the improvements though!). Is there a reason I can’t see the battery page in the iOS app without an account? That being said, the account login doesn’t appear to work and I have yet to see the battery page.

Classic, that's how they want you to make feel good. I bet it was just a 4kb memory page. Sure, technically "free range". I really wish lawmakers would take a stance against pointer cruelty.
030
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
Are they organic though? I hate industrially farmed dangling pointers, they always keep them in tiny malloc zones and cram as many as possible in there.

Anyways, 300 characters is rough, but I'm happy to have an honest discussion over a beer or two. I can certainly see arguments for AI and I'm not in the business of gatekeeping, but I also fully understand why people reject it. Two things can be true at the same time.
110
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
I'm cynical enough to agree that it's a foregone conclusion given the market forces though. Doesn't mean everyone must be excited about it. Most aren't excited about the foregone conclusion that they will die either, just to throw in a logical extreme.
100
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Ultimately though, the push for AI for most comes from above where it 100% is driven by "number must go up". I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with wanting to reject that, I also don't think the Luddites were inherently wrong rejecting the loom even though I'm benefiting from it today
100
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
But I do think that AI is not free of problems, just like previous technological advancements have had their fair share of issues, a lot of which are still impacting us today. "Just embrace it, it's going to happen eventually anyways" is not the compelling argument that it's made out to be.
110
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
No and I don't believe I passed a value judgment on AI or its users at any point here. As with most problems that we are facing these days, the underlying issue is that nothing is just black and white and that there is a lot more nuance than fits in 300 characters.
110
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
And also, I know number needs to go up, but come on thats unsustainable. Okay cool, you get a productivity boost out of it while alienating the very people you want to have the boost. All for what, line goes up? And you wonder why people who are in it for the love of creativity reject it?
100
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Most games very publicly advertise their tooling, I don’t think anyone ever got fired for choosing fmod. But taking two steps back here, one, the very technology that you are saying is going to make gaming better is currently pricing the consumer out of gaming. Who is left to buy the games?
210
Sidney @justsid.bsky.social · 24/06/2026
Maybe this should tell you something about the proposal at hand though. If the backlash is strong for something, maybe pushing harder for it while trying to hide it is not the right path forward?

(fun fact only slightly related that not everyone seems to know, you can also use: `ptr,10` to view a pointer as an array of 10 elements)

Two Vulkan variable shading rate gotchas: On Nvidia, shading rate attachments get cleared to 0 after a dynamic rendering pass. On AMD, enabling pipeline shading rates disables MSAA completely even if the rate is set to 1x1. In unrelated news, guess who shipped VRS with MSAA and dynamic rendering.

It’s funny to see staging considered an anti pattern. I often use it as a lite commit and then try some dumb hacks. If it works out, it gets added to the staging area. I also use it to selectively stash just the staged changes to clean commits up. Agree in general though lore looks very interesting
