I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

And now we are going after gay marriage in Idaho. This is Christian nationalism plain and simple. Here in America, we are not ok.

Idaho wants to gut Obergefell v. Hodges, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage. MAGA's war on LGBTQ+ rights continues. They won't stop until love is re-criminalized. Marriage equality is under fire. 🏳️‍🌈 #DefendLove #MarriageEquality #LGBTQ #QueerRights #LoveIsLove

Following is a non-exhaustive list of things that people need in order to even think about #resisting and ways you can help:

Max Smith @justmax828.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
These things can not be afterthoughts. They can not be given begrudgingly. We need to build these supports into the very core of our coalitions and campaigns, or else we are not fighting for everyone; we're fighting for those who already have a voice... I am one of these people with barriers...

Max Smith @justmax828.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
If we want people to participate and lend their voice, we have to listen to the things they are already saying. We need a concerted effort to address these barriers. We need a solid foundation upon which to build our resistance, draw our line in the sand. We need INFRASTRUCTURE...

... if you don't understand the lingo; if you're afraid of losing your job or failing a class; if you have any number of common, everyday barriers, you can't get to the table. And these are the types of things that cause people to vote red or to not vote at all. WE ARE NOT LISTENING.

Max Smith @justmax828.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
... We do not actually make room at the table for everyone. If you're a single parent; if you're disabled; if you're neurodivergent; if you have no childcare or transportation or decent internet access; if you need an interpreter or sign language; if you need gender-neutral bathrooms; ...

...people need to know if they lose their jobs or lose pay or lose housing that their community will be there to catch them. Coalitions and dance party fundraisers are all well and good, but we need to confront a dark truth about the way we conduct activism:

It's because they have very basic, everyday needs that are either not being met or will be hindered by participating. There are very real barriers, and I don't see them being addressed. We cannot say we speak for the disenfranchised while doing nothing to allow them to speak for themselves...

... they voted for BEING HEARD. Even if they weren't ACTUALLY heard by who they voted for, they FELT heard, and that is important. Do you know why so many people don't participate in local grassroots groups and events, protests, rallies, listening sessions, boycotts?

...and venting about how people are "too lazy" or "apathetic" or "comfortable" to do anything about the current state of affairs only serves to alienate these people. Which is a large part of how we got in this situation in the first place. Most people who voted Trmp did not vote FOR bigotry...

People know they need to organize; people WANT to do something. But people need guidance on what to do, where to go, and, most importantly, they need RESOURCES in order to participate. There are real barriers to large swaths of our communities participating in resisting...

🧵 So many posts and articles and videos about how everyone needs to organize NOW; it's everyone's job to defend democracy; we have to set aside our differences, etc. And I agree with all of these things. What I don't see is HOW. Telling people to organize or join their local groups isn't enough. 🧵

Teachers and schools need to know that we are not required to give up our kids. We do not have to open our doors to ICE or the police. Morally, obviously, but also legally. We are our students' legal guardians when they are in our care and we should be making the right call for students' safety.
