Shipping emissions mandate led to spike in global temperatures | Cornell Chronicle
The shipping industry dramatically cut sulfur emissions, resulting in diminished cloud cover over the oceans. This caused a global temperature spike in 2023.

Monthly mean #SST of the Mediterranean Sea. Trend (global warming) has been eliminated, so only some punctual episodes (marine heatwave episodes like those of 2003) should be highlighted. Then, what has been happening since early 2022? What are these sustained high sea surface temperatures? 🌊🧪
Monthly SST for the Mediterranean Sea since 1987. It is clear that there has been a sustained increase in temperature since 2022. What has changed since the first quarter of this year? Tonga eruption? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Hunga_Tonga%E2%80%93Hunga_Ha%CA%BBapai_eruption_and_tsunami

Two of my old images of the Orion Nebula (M42), taken with different devices. On the left is a photo taken with a Google Pixel 7 Pro in #astrophotography mode (4 minutes of stacking), and on the right is a photo taken with a Seestar S50 (50 minutes of stacking). Curious fact in ALT description.
Complex organic molecules have been detected in M42. If you could fly through it and take a sniff, it might smell like sulfur (rotten eggs) mixed with sweet-smelling hydrocarbons (similar to a charcoal grill or hot metal).

I decided that 25.5 hours was finally enough for this wider shot of the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51). I shot it in both LRGB & HaLRGB. The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101/NGC5457). Image taken over eight hours with a Seestar S50. No real post-processing was applied, only the provided by Seestar itself and some focusing tools. #astrophotography
M 101 as seen using Seestar S50, a nice galaxy at roughly 21 to 25 million light-years awayAnnotated image from nova.astrometry.net. The last supernova detected in it occurred in May 2023. A massive supernova (SN 2023ixf) was discovered in one of its spiral arms. It appeared right next to NGC 5461 (annotated in the left arm in the image), which is one of the largest and most active nebulae (H II regions) in the Pinwheel Galaxy. It was visible for months.

The result isn't very spectacular, but I like this rude combination. A mosaic from 1st night + capture from the 2nd. I had to deal with the varying noise levels between the two sessions. 3D diagram showing relative distances by Galaxy Visualizer, a Python project I'm developing #astrophotography
Capturing the full Markarian's Chain with my Seestar S50 took two nights. While it's not the best photo, I had to combine a mosaic from the first night, which was composed of almost five hours of 30-second images, with a single capture of over six hours of 30-second images. This meant that I had to deal with the different noise levels from both sessions. Siril + Graxpert + Naztronomy. Final composition in Gimp and Google PhotosMain objects as detected by https://astrometry.net I created the 3D diagram showing the relative distances between all the galaxies in the chain using Galaxy Visualizer, a Python project I'm developing.

The second part of yesterday's offering. Simpke stacking of more than six hours imaged. Now I'm trying to stack both (yesterday & today's images) at the same time with Siril. It's tricky because the composition is L-shaped and background and border noise is not easy to mitigate... #astrophotography

The spring is about to start with 2 cloud free nights and I'll try to capture the #Markarian Chain. Today the first part: 4.8 hours images stacked by #Seestar S50 and adjusted with google photos by the phone. It is located at a distance of about 50 to 60 million ly (15-18) megaparsecs (Mpc).
The Markarian's Chain is a striking alignment of galaxies located within the heart of the Virgo Cluster. Named after astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, it consists of at least eight galaxies, including the prominent M84, M86, and the interacting pair known as "The Eyes." While they appear as a curved line from Earth, most are physically linked by gravity and move together through space. Identification of the more prominent objects by https://astrometry.net

The Leo Triplet is a cosmic dance 35M light-years away. Gravitational tug-of-war between M65, M66, and NGC 3628 has warped their shapes. 🔹 M66: Asymmetric arms & starbursts. 🔹 NGC 3628: A 300k light-year tidal tail. 🔹 M65: The calmest of the trio. #Astronomy #Space #Astrophotography #Leo_triplet
The Leo triplet captured and fast processed by a Seestar S50. The three galaxies are gravitationally linked:

1- M66 (NGC 3627, lower left): The most visibly distorted, showing a displaced core and high star formation rates due to the interaction.

2- NGC 3628 (The Hamburger Galaxy, upper): Displays a "boxy" bulge and a massive tidal tail of gas and stars being pulled away.

3- M65 (NGC 3623, lower right): While appearing more "normal," it still shows a slightly warped disk from past gravitational disturbancesIdentification provided by astrometry.net

#NGC-891 (Caldwell 23) is an unbarred spiral galaxy located about 32 million light-years away in the constellation Andromeda. It is considered to be very similar to our own Milky Way galaxy and would appear similar when viewed edge-on. See ALT text for processing details. 🧪 #astrophotography
View of spiral galaxy NGC-891 (also known as C23) using Seestar S50. The filamentary patterns perpendicular to the galactic plane (barely discernible in this image) are thought to be ejected dust from supernova explosions.
