Michigan has produced many fine character actors. Dana Elcar was one. Dana, you are our Michigan Character Actor of the Week. 🫡

I think "This is your brain on drugs" was (and probably is) more famous, but "I learned it by watching you" made a deeper impression on me. It's stuck in my brain enough that I quote it sometimes, whereas Brain on Drugs is more like, "Oh yeah, that was a thing."

"Sunday Snuggles are mandatory."
A gray cat lounges on a blue comforter. The photographer is lying under the cat. The cat is looking at the lens in a scolding manner, as if it can read the photographer's mind and knows he would like to get up and eat something rather than pet the cat.

Does she? Does she love it?
An ad for a dog toy that keeps treats inside. The copy says "Our dog loves it!! It is a great way to make her treats last longer." Beside the copy is a photo of a dog with the toy. The dog is a black Frenchie-type with abject misery in her eyes.

USED CARS: When this country was knee deep in malaise, it made comedy films with insane car stunts. God willing, in our new era of shit, we will return to our roots and make rusted out spectacles for the common people.

HOPE: Too long. I didn't like the CGI. But it's a fun ride. It made me laugh. Throughout the end, I was both admiring the balls and sweating in secondhand embarrassment. That means something. Maybe. Three stars.

I highly recommend Icarus Films' set of THE BATTLE OF CHILE, which includes the trilogy and a related, earlier film. I watched them all one Sunday back in May, absolutely great and compelling works.

I already have the Warner Archive of SHOP AROUND THE CORNER… BUT the Criterion 4K would be an upgrade. I still don't have a 4K player or TV… BUT the Criterion would be a great Xmas gift for my wife. She doesn't care about physical media. It would be a gift for me… BUT it would be a gift for me.

I was watching A NIGHT AT THE OPERA while my wife was sleeping on me. She woke up when Billy Gilbert briefly appeared, as if summoned by his presence, and recognized him as Pettibone from HIS GIRL FRIDAY. Then she fell back asleep.

A photograph of my big gray cat lying on my arm, his paws crossed daintily over my flesh, his black pupils and green iris barreling at the lens, his giant ears very pink and batlike.

We were in Allentown this weekend and ate at Yocco's, a local hot dog chain. The memorable logo answers the question, "What if Jesus were also the Devil?"
The exterior of a Yocco's, a storefront with the logo, the name, and "The Hot Dog King" in quotation marks.A close up of the logo: a red hot dog with a black outline and a smile that's like when a child sees an opportunity to do mischief without getting caught. He wears a yellow crown and also has yellow rays shooting out of his head, not unlike some depictions of saintliness. He's about to eat a hot dog that looks a smaller version of himself speared on a red trident, meaning he's also a cannibal.

Beyond the Fuck-Harry-Potter-ness of it, I just don't like looking at that new Harry Potter kid. Bad vibes. Like he came pre-haunted by his past as a child actor, but it is still his present.

Starbucks Workers United @sbworkersunited.org · 25/08/2026
🚨BREAKING: Our union of over 12,000 baristas are officially calling for a Starbucks boycott. Read this statement penned by Starbucks workers on why a boycott from ALL customers, allies, and organizations is necessary to fight back against corporate greed:
BOYCOTT STARBUCKS is written inside a zig-zaggy speech bubble against crumbled paper. Beside it are the Starbucks Workers United logo and an image of a coffee cup being poured out.We, the 12,000 and growing members of Starbucks Workers United, call on everyone who stands with working people to boycott Starbucks until they finalize a contract with union baristas and stop union-busting.
What we’re fighting for is simple: a minimum $17/hr wage, enough hours to live on, better staffing in our stores, and basic workplace protections. Every year, our living costs rise but our wages don’t keep up – a growing pressure many American workers are feeling as corporate greed accelerates unchecked in our country.
Starbucks is banking on customers' blind loyalty to the integrity and values this company once stood for in order to keep squeezing them for profits. At a time when working-class people across the country are struggling in a challenging economy, it is no longer possible to be both a Starbucks customer and in support of workers; choosing to spend money at Starbucks is choosing a law breaking corporation over the baristas who make your coffee everyday exactly as you ask for it.
Starbucks has violated U.S. labor law more than any other company in modern history–the NLRB and its judges have found that Starbucks committed hundreds of labor violations and there are currently more than 550 unresolved unfair labor practice charges still pending against the company. Instead of finalizing a fair and reasonable union contract, Starbucks has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of care for the workers who fuel the company’s profits by wasting millions of dollars on AI and technology that doesn’t work, launching countless gimmicky drinks designed to distract from real problems, and inventing pointless policies that do nothing but make our jobs harder.
This ongoing, irrational behavior by Starbucks and its refusal to settle a fair union contract with workers leaves us with no other choice than to call for a boycott. We know when working people stand up together, we win.
No Contract? No Coffee.

WAR MACHINE (2026) is a by-the-numbers PREDATOR riff mixed with the Crisis-As-Therapy genre that's still pretty effective. Had the family hooting and hollering when we watched it on a home theater system. Big screen and sound system helped greatly, I think.

I really liked COYOTE VS. ACME, but I think an even higher compliment to it is that my wife (a more general audience member than a film or comedy dork like me) LOVED it. It's a real audience pleaser. They did the damn thing.

ARMY OF SHADOWS is a bleak masterpiece. It shows that resistance usually amounts to killing each other rather than the enemy, with no promise you'll see the other side of it - if it ever comes. The characters know that, and still they continue.

THE ODYSSEY has made me realize what might be the crux of my feelings about Nolan's work. In the Soderbergh sense of macro vs. micro editing, I like Nolan's macro editing but often find his micro editing clumsy. So while I like the general idea and elements, the nuts and bolts keep me from swooning.

My wife & I were in Michigan for a couple of weeks. My parents like the TV on, so we saw 9,000 political ads. Half were for Republican shitheads. Half were pro-Stevens or anti-Abdul El-Sayed. Exactly two were pro El-Sayed. My parents & another friend's mother were both still voting for El-Sayed.

A friend of mine found these three kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?

My wife told me about a trashy horror film a friend had shared on FB called 70MM BEAVERS and I was immediately intrigued. "Show this to me." Turned out she misread the title; it was actually ZOMBEAVERS. I'm not interested in ZOMBEAVERS. But I would LOVE to watch 70MM BEAVERS.

Did Dr. Bunsen Honeydew study Muppet health or human health in medical school? If he was a trainee doctor, like in The Pitt, would he have been limited to treating just the Muppet patients? Maybe that's why he ultimately went into science.
