Sometimes you come across a paragraph which you wish could be an entire book. (From "The Soul of Indiscretion: Tom Driberg: Poet, Philanderer, Legislator and Outlaw" by Francis Wheen)
Two months later, on 13 September, Tom was transferred to a corner of the paper where his social contacts could be exploited more often - as assistant to Colonel Percy Sewell, author of a daily column of social chit-chat called "The Talk of London'. He was at last given a proper contract of employment. His salary was raised to seven guineas a week.
Sewell was a lonely, mysterious, melancholy figure. He believed that every man is born with a fixed number of orgasms in his body and that when you've come this number of times you're finished sexually'. In spite of their differences of opinion on such matters, Tom and the colonel liked each other. (According to Tom, one rumour advanced to explain Sewell's hangdog demeanour was that he had fallen irrevocably but unrequitedly in love with a lesbian.) Sewell would spend most of his afternoons on the golf course or at the races, leaving Tom to fill whatever space was left.

Canada's employment rate is up 1 point over last year. The unemployment rate (graph below) is pretty static. Below the toplines, Canada is seeing a surprising boom in manufacturing.
Trump Truth Social post: "Canada is destroying itself by allowing millions and millions of people into the Country, essentially unchecked and unvetted, and who are causing problems that will soon be too big to handle. It is a Liberal takeover that will end very badly. Already showing up in their numbers. Big unemployment. ‘Oh Canada! And here's her gay pal William Arondeus, who helped bombed the Dutch public records office to help Jews flee Nazi terror. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willem_...
As a gay artist, Willem Arondéus had always felt like an outsider. But during the occupation, he finally felt he could make a difference. Together with friends, Willem concocted a plan to destroy the Amsterdam Registry Office. The Registry Office contained the files used to check whether a person's identity card was genuine or false. For their plan, the group needed a map of the building, the guards' schedule, explosives and police uniforms to disguise themselves. It took five months to prepare. On 27 March 1943, they successfully carried out the attack. The spectacular action was the talk of the Netherlands! Yet not every personal index card was destroyed. And the attack came too late for the many Jews who had already been deported.

Someone betrayed them, and Willem and 11 other co-conspirators were arrested and shot. A friend of Willem's later said that, shortly before his execution, he asked her to tell the world that homosexuals are not weak.

Between 10,000 and 15,000 German gay people were imprisoned in concentration camps. In the Netherlands, the persecution of homosexuals was limited. Only one Dutch man is known to have been sent to a camp for being gay.Collection of photos and letterhead featuring a man in a suit and tie and a carnation in his lapel

Today, at the Dutch Resistance Musuem, I learned about Freida Belinfante — all around badass. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frieda_...
After the liberation, resistance fighter Frieda Belinfante returned from Switzerland, to which she had fled. She was a self-assured lesbian woman, but now she felt lost. "You didn't hear a word about the resistance fighters who had risked their lives. People iust did their thing: earned money, built a life for themselves. It was a harsh wake-up call."
Like many members of the resistance, Frieda had hoped for a greater sense of community after the war. "We thought everything would be better, including politically, but nothing had changed at all." Disappointed, Frieda emigrated to the United States, where she achieved success as one of the few female orchestra conductorsPhoto of a woman I'm a suit and tie, smoking a cigarette

Some solidarity from @newsmediaalliance.bsky.social
Tweet from the News/Media Alliance:

Google and Meta want Washington to treat their opposition to basic accountability as a U.S. trade priority. It isn’t.

The Trump Administration should reject Big Tech’s effort to use trade negotiations to dismantle Canada’s Online News Act. The law is a modest, fair way to ensure dominant platforms contribute to the journalism they profit from and that their users rely on.

A trade deal should deliver for American workers, businesses, and consumers, not become a vehicle for Big Tech monopolists to rewrite another country’s laws for their own benefit.

Politico is reporting out parts of the U.S-Canada draft deal. Still some missing and unconfirmed pieces, but this sounds like a pretty anemic deal. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2026...
Industry representatives are weighing in on a proposal which would see the U.S. reduce tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum from 50 percent to 25 percent, according to five people close to the discussions, including two who have seen the text. The U.S. would also lower tariffs on some derivative products. The people were granted anonymity to share private conversations.
For steel, however, only a set volume of imports would be able to enter the United States at the lower rate each year, according to three of the people. Everything above that quota would still face the 50 percent tariff rate.
Canada would have to drop its retaliatory tariffs and adjust its duties on some downstream products made with the metals to align more closely with the U.S. approach, three of the people said. That would include setting higher tariffs for trading partners that aren’t covered under Canada’s free trade agreements, according to two people.
On autos, the United States is also considering slashing its 25 percent tariff on Canadian vehicles to 15 percent, according to four people close to the process, in exchange for Ottawa removing its retaliatory tariffs. That tariff reduction could be contingent on having a set amount of U.S. content within the vehicle and pledging further expansion, said two of the people, who stressed those negotiations remain ongoing.

We still have no real idea what's in this Canada-U.S deal from last night. There's been a few vague leaks from PM Carney's briefing of the premiers, but now Quebec's premier says a deal is "far from being concluded" and isn't sure she can get behind it.
Tweet from quebec premier Christine Frechette

Text says that she met with Prime Minister Mark Carney and her fellow premiers. The negotiations are far from being done. She lacks enough information to conclude whether the deal protects Quebec's interests. She's waiting on points of clarity. She concludes by saying that Quebec, and only Quebec, will decide what alcohol its state company sells.

What's more, the CDC was already providing very plain and direct advice to pregnant people that exactly matched what Fauci was saying publicly and privately: The risk is possible but not well-established. They provided information and let people make their own decisions.
Screenshot of the CDC website circa December 2020:

"There are currently few data on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines, including mRNA vaccines, in pregnant people. Limited data are currently available from animal developmental and reproductive toxicity studies. No safety concerns were demonstrated in rats that received Moderna COVID-19 vaccine prior to or during gestation in terms of female reproduction, fetal/embryonal development, or postnatal development. Studies in pregnant people are planned and the vaccine manufacturers are following outcomes in people in the clinical trials who became pregnant. Based on current knowledge, experts believe that mRNA vaccines are unlikely to pose a risk to the pregnant person or the fetus because mRNA vaccines are not live vaccines. The mRNA in the vaccine is degraded quickly by normal cellular processes and does not enter the nucleus of the cell. However, the potential risks of mRNA vaccines to the pregnant person and the fetus are unknown because these vaccines have not been studied in pregnant people...If pregnant people are part of a group that is recommended to receive a COVID-19 vaccine (e.g., healthcare personnel), they may choose to be vaccinated. A conversation between the patient and their clinical team may assist with decisions regarding the use of a mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, though a conversation with a healthcare provider is not required prior to vaccination"

Here's the relevant bits, by the way.
At 0001:17 the ARTCC controller telephoned their operations supervisor and requested [the military] to stop jamming.
At 0001:46, the ARTCC controller cleared the flight to the REYOK intersection and provided a heading of 350°. The pilot read back the clearance. Shortly thereafter, the airplane turned to a northernly heading that put the airplane on a path to cross the ILS 24 approach course between the initial approach fix (CEVBA) and REYOK fix. During the turn, the pilot requested the ILS approach to SRR due to the loss of GPS navigation capability.
The airplane continued a northerly heading for about 20 nautical miles, at a GPS altitude of about 12,600 ft. During this segment of the flight, the ARTCC controller provided services to other air traffic, including three additional aircraft that reported a loss of GPS. One of those aircraft expressed difficulty identifying a directed to ground based navigation aid and required additional assistance from ARTCC.
At 0004:43 the ARTCC controller advised the flight crew that they would provide radar vectors utilizing right turns to align the airplane for a straight-in approach over the REYOK intersection "in a couple minutes."
About 0005 the ARTCC operations supervisor contacted [the military] to stop jamming and at 0007:34 ADS-B data recording returned to 2-3 second intervals.Mountains. extendina to 10.201 ft. were located about 14 miles northeast of SRR between the airplane and the airport. About 0010, the ARTCC operations supervisor informed [the military] that the airplane was on a visual approach and that they could resume jamming. At 0010:27 ADS-B again began collecting data at about one-minute intervals. About the same time, the airplane began descending toward SRR followed by a slight right turn at 0013:26 and 9,820 ft Spidertrack GPS altitude. The airplane continued to descend until about 0014:45 when the airplane climbed from about 9,400 ft Spidertrack GPS altitude until the last Spidertrack data point at 001 5:26 recorded the airplane at 9,823 ft Spidertrack GPS altitude, 150 kts groundspeed, and a true heading of 250° The airplane impacted terrain about 250 ft southwest of the last recorded data point at an elevation of about 9,950 ft, and about 730 ft east and 230 ft below the Capitan Mountains Summit Radio Facility, located at an elevation of about 10,180 ft. A post impact fire occurred that initiated a forest fire.

Holy shit. www.wired.com/story/a-civi...
This past May, a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air medevac plane took off from Roswell, New Mexico, and headed west to the town of Ruidoso to pick up a patient. It shouldn’t have been a challenging flight for the two pilots and two nurses aboard. The temperature was 69 degrees; the sky was clear. The 60-mile journey normally takes a half hour, at most.

But once airborne, the plane ran into trouble. At the White Sands Missile Range that night, US military personnel were conducting a GPS jamming exercise that left the King Air pilots—and anyone else within hundreds of miles—unable to use modern navigation systems. Forced to revert to older technology, ones that they rarely if ever use, the medevac pilots got disoriented and crashed into the side of a mountain. There were no survivors.

I actually really love this memo because it's clearly the ramblings of some random source the FBI has recruited, and they pass along the claims with a note that says: "1. This is impossible. 2. Call him back if you want."
Text from FBI source to FBI:

"TEXT:
1. In late August 2020, the Chinese government had
produced a large amount of fraudulent United States drivers licenses
that were secretly exported to the United States (NFI). The
fraudulent drivers licenses would allow tens of thousands of Chinese
students and immigrants sympathetic to the Chinese Communist Party
to vote for US Presidential Candidate USPER Joe ( (Biden)), despite-"(text continued) not being eligible to vote in the United States. China had collected
private US user data from millions of TikTok accounts, to include
name, ID and address, which would allow the Chinese government to
use real US persons' information to create the fraudulent drivers
license. The fraudulent drivers licenses were to include true ID
number and true address of US citizens, making them difficult to
detect. China planned to use the fraudulent drivers licenses to
account for tens of thousands of mail-in votes."

"FBI COMMENTS: A persons address information was not a
valid field when creating a TikTok account. It was unspecified how
China would attain US address data from the application.
2. Source is available for re-contact."

I've been waiting for Tidal to figure out its position on AI-generated music. It finally has, and it's pretty good: -AI labeling -No using AI to impersonate real artists -AI music won't be monetized support.tidal.com/hc/en-us/art...
Our stance on AI-generated music
Hi,
AI music generation tools are changing how music is created and distributed. As this technology evolves, Tidal is introducing platform standards to protect artists, their craft, and inform listeners.
Here are the highlights of our new AI Policy:

Tidal will identify and tag AI-generated music in our app. Listeners will see an "AI" badge next to music we detect as wholly AI-generated.
Tidal will not tolerate AI-generated music that impersonates an artist or group, or that facilitates fraudulent activity. We're implementing automatic tools to remove these releases immediately and on an ongoing basis.
Tidal will not allow music that is 100% AI-generated to be monetized. No royalties will go to such releases, nor will AI-generated uploads be eligible for direct-to-fan sales.
We will expand these policies to music that is substantially AI-generated when AI detection technology is sufficiently reliable to do so.

You'll start seeing these changes from July 15.

In Chain of Ideas, Ibram X. Kendi argues that the Great Replacement Theory is *the* driving ideology behind this new reactionary authoritarianism. He makes a good case for it here: www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/a-chain-of...
The success of neo-Nazi great replacement politicians in the twenty-first century often hinges on the success of their most basic renovations — how completely they strip the core ideas down to their structure, while superficially decorating their political theory with new embellishments. The more they remove the Nazi underpinnings from view, the more they entice electoral support for their neo-Nazi project.

Neo-Nazi great replacement theorists do not need to admire Nazis to be neo-Nazis, just as children do not need to admire their parents to be their children. What matters is genealogy. A genealogy of theory and tactics.

Joint statement from Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom condemning settlement expansion in the West Bank, warning companies that bid on construction contracts could face legal consequences.

“Statement by the leaders of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the United Kingdom on the situation in the West Bank.

Over the past few months, the situation in the West Bank has deteriorated significantly. Settler violence is at unprecedented levels. The policies and practices of the Israeli government, including a further entrenchment of Israeli control, are undermining stability and prospects for a two-state solution.

International law is clear: Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal. Construction projects in the E1 area would be no exception.

The E1 settlement development would divide the West Bank in two and mark a serious breach of international law.

Businesses should not bid for construction tenders for E1 or other settlement developments. They should be aware of legal and reputational consequences of participating in settlement construction including the risk of involving themselves in serious breaches of international law.

We call on the Government of Israel to end its expansion of settlements and administrative powers, ensure accountability for settler violence and investigate allegations against Israeli forces, respect the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s Holy Sites and the historic status quo arrangements, and lift financial restrictions on the Palestinian Authority and the Palestinian economy. We strongly oppose those, including members of the Israeli government, who argue for annexation and forcible displacement of the Palestinian population.

We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on a negotiated two-state solution in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions where two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side in peace and security within secure and recognised borders.”

It's a man in a weirdly unmarked Habs jersey (Red, blue line, but no logo) holding a cardboard cutout of a raccoon holding a trumpet.

Canada has, in the span of a year, nearly doubled its defence spending to hit 2%/GDP; stood up a project to build America's much-needed icebreakers; and is (finally) creating its own defence industrial base. So, naturally, the U.S. is suspending a shared defence panel that's been around since 1940.
Tweet from under secretary of war Elbridge Colby:

"A strong Canada that prioritizes hard power over rhetoric benefits us all. Unfortunately, Canada has failed to make credible progress on its defense commitments. DoW is pausing the Permanent Joint Board on Defense to reassess how this forum benefits shared North American defense. 1/3"
