PhD opportunity at @liser.lu: Housing provision as enjoyment jobs.liser.lu/job/Esch-sur... Part of the @fnr.lu funded C-SOS (Competitiveness within a Safe Operating Space) Doctoral Training Unit, in collaboration with LIST and @uni.lu Deadline: September 18th, 2026 Happy to answer any questions!
This call is to contribute to this DTU through the development of a PhD project on housing provision as enjoyment in the context of the current housing unaffordability crisis. While economic causes are widely researched, less is known of the role played by enjoyment, desire and drive in the development of housing unaffordability. In housing, it is crucial to scrutinize forms of individualistic enjoyment, such as the control over land exercised by landowners, the production of value by property developers, and the domination landlords exercise over tenants. It is also urgent to identify and amplify more collective forms of enjoyment in housing provision, such as the investments driving the development of social housing, cooperative housing or community land trusts – forms of enjoyment that foreground the use value of ‘home’ and collective libidinal investments in housing provision.

To map these forms of individualistic and collective enjoyment, and to uncover how they become socially accepted part of the ‘new normal’ of housing systems, the project can mobilise, among others: historical analysis of elite discourses and legal texts to identify shifts in the social acceptability of certain forms of individualistic or collective housing-related enjoyment; biographical or life-course interviews with property actors centring on the drivers of their actions; analysis of cultural production (literature, art, music, film, etc.), social media discourse or AI-generated text.

Western economies have become obsessed with house price growth. This headline in the left-liberal Austrian newspaper @derstandard.at fits into the picture: "Iran war: is now the right time to buy an apartment?" Among all the things about this war that need reporting, is that it?

Dear Colleagues, On behalf my co-organisers, I am writing to invite abstract submissions for the ‘Re-centring land conflicts in the post-globalisation order’ mini-conference (MC11) as part of the SASE 2026 Conference in Bordeaux (1-3 July). sase.org/events/2026-... Deadline: December 16th
In this mini-conference, we are seeking to have a critical debate about land struggles over sovereignty, resources and means of survival. We are inviting folks to submit abstracts (no more than 1000 words) which raise land as the main object of analysis of power in a ‘post-globalisation order’. By seeking to re-centre the Land Question in contemporary socio and political economic debate and scholarship, we aim to illuminate how land and the power it confers shape institutions, create and mediate conflicts, and determine possibilities for both domination and resistance in an era marked by ecological crisis and geopolitical realignment.

We are particularly interested in hearing about research which speaks to one of our key themes:

1. Land conflicts and new imperialisms
2. Extractivism and resource conflicts
3. Digital infrastructure and the material internet
4. Institutions and power in the regulation of land
5. Consequences of urban and rural land concentration
6. Land rent and heterodox economics
