Major thanks to a listener, Justin, who pointed out a few Infinite Jest companions that we were unaware existed. We'll discuss all three on the next episode, but the primary one he suggested is this (please don't buy from Amazon): bookshop.org/p/books/eleg...

Check out Elegant Complexity - Elegant Complexity is the first critical work to provide detailed and thorough commentary on each of the 192 sections of David Foster Wallace's masterful Infinite Jest. ...

Having print subscriptions to things like Jacobin (quarterly) and The Nation (monthly), plus living in a place where the mail is very slow to arrive, is a lesson in the shortness of the news cycle. By the time I get the magazine, it’s reminding me of two-month-old horrors I’d already forgotten.

Lenin’s “Imperialism” would be instructive to whoever wrote this nonsensical headline. Of course transnational capital generally has access to poor countries’ labor markets — buyers of labor face no scrutiny for such mobility, only those who need to sell their labor.

Ok one thing laypeople often comment w.r.t. singers (classical singers) is about their “lung capacoty.” A large or beautiful voice is not closely related to lung capacity, and lung capacity is something singers and singing teachers by and large do not talk about. Shut up about lung capacity.

Just finished V., the first novel of Thomas Pynchon. Amazing how much the preoccupations and bold voice of Pynchon are already here in 1963. It’s a wild ride, and at times I wondered what it was aiming at, but I can’t deny how impressive it is for a first novel. #reading #booksky #pynchon #novel

Just finished John McPhee’s Coming Into the Country, a book that’s extremely perceptive while remaining transparent, letting its incidents speak for themselves with minimal editorializing. As an inhabitant of beyond-rural Alaska, I see both how much and how little has changed since McPhee’s 1970s
