There must be significant impact on the target number based on how the art is consumed. Do you analysis and reflect on a movie/review/larp/board game? Or do you sometimes just lean back into casual consumption?

I just published a website and started a mailing list to let people know about my #larp work free from SoMe algorithms. You can find both on justhalfdan.com

No matter what @montola.bsky.social, you are right. Understanding that players have most enjoyment when it is about their chars, is a good point to reach as a GM. Thank you for making me think about it.

Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2025
However, that responsibility is not solely on the GM. TTRPGs are social games and that means players at least in part should take responsibility for communicating and align their expectations to the GM.

Maybe I just get over defensive when I read more stuff the GM should do. I agree that great games happen when a GM understands the players "power fantasy" as the article puts it.

So basically - because of the conditions of our campaign, we had to give the players tools to make the game about their characters. Rather than it being the job of the GM.

1. At the end of each tier of play, they need to come up with their own special mission. Until they do that, they are "capped" from leveling. 2. Central NPCs with a lot of character, that the players will want to follow. 3. Factions they can be a part of, with special reward trees they can follow.

I'm DMing a game where that is not possible. Tl;dr west marches style, +20 pre- and early teen players, 3 DMs, and scheduled sessions according to a work schedule with prewritten mission prompts. Here are three things we do to make the players care:

Today this box arrived in Copenhagen. I can't express how excited I am about running #DrawSteel! Conquest begins today.
A big black box stands on a couch. Its surface has a flowy pattern and on the center is a gleaming sword, its blade steel and handle golden. There is a menacing skull at the center of the guard and several smaller ones adorn the pummel.

The words Draw Steel are faintly visible, black on black above the sword. Below it is written Ajax Edition, in a similar manner.

I just reread my #larp submission for blackbox cph 26. When asked about safety tools, past me wrote: This is a story about breaking free. It is an act of rebellion. The path to safety is to play the larp.

I'm in my thirties but I feel like a teenager: My side gig is running #d&d for 11-14 year olds. This coming week I am doing 3 sessions. My home games ran yesterday, tonight and we have our next session this Wednesday. Six games in five days #blessed (by our cleric) #livingmybestlife

Today I had my first session at a side job, gming #D&D 2024 at an after school program. I'm jumping into an already started mission based west marches campaign. 35 kids age 10-13 playing. Sessions are about two hours, I'm running 2-3 times a week. I wake up to choose chaos. Going back tomorrow.

On the other hand I also need the quest/mission based rewards. I like to have tools that drive players to engage with my story rather than derail it completely and "Proceed North". With that in mind I think the group/mission-based rewards could be proportionally larger than the personal.

I really like it. It feels good to get rewarded for doing what you want to do as a player. Getting some Skyrim vibes too. To get good with the bow, you need to fire the bow.

All I remember is suggesting that we tried using a "player journey". Thinking about every step from the moment a potential player learned about the larp and until they potentially sign up for the next one.

Maybe the trade-off is worth it? Someone should test it. If anyone wants to give it a go then Google Forms have a "Make this a quiz" option that can be turned on in settings.

Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
This is when we began to joke a bit and someone, I think it was Simon, suggested that we would not cast the player until they had passed the test. Well this certainly is an incentive. I think it is bold, and gives some responsibility to the players. However, it also restricts my casting.

Wauw I just wrote this thread about this subject and I still remain in that mindset.

Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
But Halfdan, I already spent so many our chasing players about questionnaires and payment instalments, now you want me to chase them for test results. That is of course a valid concern. To solve this we must provide the player incentive to do the test (and all the other stuff) on time.
110
Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Before you get scared or mad, amuse me for a second. The test would not be aimed to disqualify anyone from attending. But rather to help them remember the important parts of the larp content. They could look up stuff while they took the test, so in a way it would just be a reading guide.

Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
I actually hadn't looked at those numbers, this is very interesting. What would you cut?

Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
The discussion turned towards solutions... dangerous, I know. We talked about a lot of different ideas like certifications larp mechanics, a duolingo app about larp and so on. What stuck with me was the idea to have players pass a test about the larp content, before they get their character.
120
Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Of course I could just do it. Blindly trust my participants to read all my material and watch the video briefings. I wish I could convince myself that would happen. But life of a modern larper is busy and full of distractions. Maybe we need other measures to establish my trust in them.
130
Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
In my dream world there are no briefings. Only social activities where players can try mechanics, negotiate and prepare for their larp. I want workshops and relationship building. However, in reality I know I will always need to do at least a bit of priming/hype and practical housekeeping.
220
Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
In a discussion we talked about what we can do to regain trust in the participants. What are actions we as organisers can take to trust our players have read the material we have spent a significant amount of our free time creating? It is not like the designers enjoys the 4-hour info-dumbo.
130
Halfdan @justhalfdan.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Last week a larp design issue came up. As larpmakers we spend a lot of time making content that we hope our participants will read/watch/listen to. But we rarely trust our players to have done so, because we include a lot of the same content in the on-site briefings and workshops.
