The duty has been adopted in both Scotland and Wales however is not yet commenced in England. Once this is done, it will be a new tool for addressing socio-economic inequality at a local level. 4/5

Section 1 of the Equality Act 2010, the socio-economic duty, is intended to reduce socio-economic disadvantage. If enacted, it requires local and public authorities to consider the ways in which their decisions increase or decrease socio-economic inequalities. 3/5

Our evidence is also quoted in the Roadmap, including on the importance of legal protection, accountability and shifting systems “from crisis response toward prevention and accountability.” A right to food must address the systems that leave people without enough to eat. 2/2

As debate over PIP returns, disabled people must be at the centre of decisions affecting them. A rights-based approach means listening to lived experience, tackling barriers & ensuring people can realise their rights in practice, not treating support as a cost to be cut. 2/2
