Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Welfare cut relative to what? If pensions still rise with CPI, pensioners wouldn't lose out in a crisis relative to wages that don't always pick up. Also, if you are not willing to change the rule, what should the govt do to keep it going? Where should it cut or how should it raise more revenues? 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I don't think it should be seen as a welfare cut, rather a change in the rules that brings stability for govt's finances and is more sensible. Currently, during a shock, pensions get uprated twice, once with CPI then with wages. Also, indexing on CPI ensures pensioners don't lose out during shocks. 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I think this is good news. In a previous note I was arguing that in supply shocks, indexing on CPI and Average earnings meant that pensions were uprated twice (once when prices spike, then when wages pick back up). So this is some good news. But we could go further: www.nesta.org.uk/blog/fiscal-...nesta.org.ukFiscal options: picking the state pension triple lockA package of reforms to both the triple lock and to Pension Credit could save the government £5-12 billion per year while reducing pensioner poverty. 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 29/09/2026#LPC #PMSpeech How do you break the link between electricity and gas prices? - you build more capacity - you move away from wholesale market - you reduce demand This is what we explained in our note on electricity markets. Keen to see which option the govt will pick www.nesta.org.uk/blog/what-is...nesta.org.ukWhat is marginal pricing and how does it work?Marginal pricing plays a central role in setting the price households pay for electricity. Here, we explain how - and why it matters. 000
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 29/09/2026At #LPC watching the #PMSpeech. Things I'm watching out for: govt borrowing / fiscal position and potential options (triple lock? Prepare people for lower headroom?), public control & what it means, same for devolution in times of crisis. And keen to see the market reaction. 000
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Check out our blog post here "Fiscal options: picking the triple lock" for more details (& cool graphs) www.nesta.org.uk/blog/fiscal-... @theguardian.com #Pensionsnesta.org.ukFiscal options: picking the state pension triple lockA package of reforms to both the triple lock and to Pension Credit could save the government £5-12 billion per year while reducing pensioner poverty. 000
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 16/09/2026So a government interested in pensioner poverty would look at reforming pension credit and the triple lock, which is unpredictable on public finances. There are lots of options. Many countries index pensions on inflation growth with a backstop, making sure pensions don't go below 25% of median wage. 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Indeed, although the triple lock has made sure pensions rose in line with inflation (shielding them from cost of living shocks) and earnings (shielding them from uncoupling from wage growth), elderly poverty rose from 9% to 14% between 2011 and now (source IFS). 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 16/09/2026Glad to see some debate on the triple lock in the @theguardian.com -- we actually got something out at @nestauk.bsky.social on this very topic (and with a similar title hehe) We argue that the triple lock has run its course as it *did not* help pensioner poverty, which has been rising since 2011. 100
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 14/09/2026If like me you're a regular #Eurostar traveller, you may have noticed that for the past year or so, the #GareDuNord now makes you take out ALL of your electronics. At a time where the airports have been massively investing in new machines to avoid taking anything out, this seems backwards to me... 000
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Thanks for sharing @joshih.bsky.social. Did you see the FT editorial on the need for local media in order for devolution to succeed (by keeping politicians accountable)? I thought it was a nice link. Devolution may bring the solution to the problem you raised - although I have some concerns. 000
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 13/09/2026This NYT article on brain rot was great, but am I missing something about the "anti-gratification" theory? Surely watching brain rot is still playing the platforms' game, either because you spend more time on them, or because you are still exposed to ads, even if you do not gain info/education? 020
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 11/09/2026The UK has one of the highest electricity to gas price ratios among advanced economies... this surely cannot help break our dependence on gas or our fight against climate change. Much of this gap is driven by policy choices. A government serious about cost of living should thus revert this urgently. 010
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Session on the media at #PolicyLive: love the point that @joshih.bsky.social made. We now receive primarily national / global news rather than in the past when it was more local, and that may make us feel helpless because we have no agency over this. To fix this: get more balanced news coverage... 🤔 232
Juliette Caucheteux @juliettecx.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Love the #PolicyLive talk on loneliness in a polarised world. My take-away: we need to build communities and re-learn to listen to each other w/ local infrastructures that unite us around shared interests (sports, gardening?).
