Whoa! Speaking of @environmentalvoter.bsky.social, they've teamed up with Patagonia for a program that launches Saturday where if you get three voters to commit to a voting plan, you get a $100 voucher for Patagonia! It launches Saturday. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/22/b...

PSA: Maine is one of 13 states that allow electronic voting for seniors & those w/ disabilities. Have her call ☎️ her local election office & sign up for this. I contacted mine in Utah—it was quick—and I’m all signed up to vote 🗳️ electronically! Here’s the full list of states that allow it:

They identify patterns in spending, etc, of people who have said that the environment is their #1 issue, and then they call people with those same patterns. IIRC, they’ve found it’s 85% accurate.

The Volts episode explains how they figure out if people are environmentalists. Voting records — that is, whether you vote, not who you vote for — are public.

Thank you, Catherine! It really is a boost to my mental health to be able to do SOMETHING to help with the polycrisis, and this is something that is accessible to me. I wanted to write it about it especially because it's something that some of us with ME (not all — sob!) can still do.

Thank YOU! Honestly, it really does help my mental health to have this simple, accessible thing to do that I'm confident makes some small difference. It's a gift to me and to the world.

With my limited and unpredictable health, it's ideal: a short training, a good script, no problem if I bail. You're not telling anyone who to vote for, just making it easier to vote.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The fix isn't persuasion. It's habit. Voting once makes you about 10 points more likely to vote next time. EVP tests its scripts and postcards in randomized trials, so volunteers use messages shown to raise turnout.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I didn't. But I sure did grin. I was volunteering with @environmentalvoter.bsky.social . EVP estimates 11.2 million people whose top issue is the environment skipped the 2024 election. Midterms are worse. And when environmentalists don't vote, politicians don't vote for the environment.

Last week I called up a stranger, an environmentalist who didn't vote. She was 82, couldn't drive to the polls anymore, and didn't know Maine now lets any voter sign up to get a mail ballot automatically for every election. I explained how. She was thrilled. "Take yourself to lunch!" she cried.

So if you also are feeling anxiety or a frustrated desire to be able to do more, I really encourage you to check out the Environmental Voter Project: environmentalvoter.org

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
They provide well-thought-through scripts you follow, so after just a few calls, it feels surprisingly easy. And when you get started, they provide training sessions that make it easy to learn and get comfortable.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
Also, it feels like a place to channel my anxiety that's productive — and a way to slightly appease my frustrated desire to do so so much more. It does require some amount of functionality to do this, but really, not very much once you learn how.
160
Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
There's a hurdle to get over in calling strangers. But I've had many interactions with folks who are genuinely grateful for the information I've given them. Sure, some folks are annoyed, but I think it's worth annoying a few people in order to help others vote, especially at this critical moment.
160
Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
This feels like a pretty high-leverage thing to do in working to save our democracy. People who vote once tend to keep doing it, so this work's impact extends far beyond the midterms. It's nonpartisan — I'm not telling people who to vote for, just giving them information so it's easier to do so.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
I'm calling voters in Maine and Michigan who don't often vote but have shown an interest in environmental issues, and I'm giving them information on how to sign up for permanent absentee ballots. People are much more likely to vote if they receive a ballot by mail.

Alice Wong taught us that disabled people don’t just leave memories behind—they leave infrastructure. Lineages of care. Methods of collectivity, survival. She named the connective tissue that holds our communities together, even across death, even across the losses that come too fast and too often.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 04/11/2025
It's not too late to pitch in! They give you a quick training, and the calls are easy to do (even from bed). Also, you can do it in short bursts to pace yourself if you need to. I find it kind of addictive, honestly. I get a rush when it seems like someone really may vote because of my call.

Julie Rehmeyer @julierehmeyer.bsky.social · 04/11/2025
Because turnout is likely to be low, in Georgia turning out just a few environmental voters can have a BIG impact. Also, if someone votes once, it's much more likely they'll keep doing it, so this work changes the electorate over time.

Others I called might not have needed that info right away, but maybe the reminder mattered. I’ll be honest: calling strangers isn’t easy. When people hung up, I felt bad for bugging them. But it’s worth briefly bugging some folks if it means someone gets the information they need to cast a ballot.

EVP finds registered voters who care about the environment but don’t always turn out—and helps them navigate the voting process. They don’t tell anyone who to vote for, just when, where, and how.
