Earliest extant portrait of an English king: Aethelstan (r. 924–927) with St Cuthbert from the Parker Library copy of Bede's two Lives of St Cuthbert (CCCC MS 183) Prof David Woodman of @camhistory.bsky.social highlights Aethelstan's impact on England's history www.corpus.cam.ac.uk/articles/new...
Opening of a 10th-century manuscript that is now in the Parker Library as CCCC MS 183. Opening shows a full page portrait of King Aethelstan (d. 939) presenting a book to St Cuthbert, or rather the community of St Cuthbert, then already in exile from Lindisfarne. The full page image has a floral border in red, king under an arch on the left and St Cuthbert in front of a brick structure topped with a cross.
Right of the image contains the beginning of Life of St Cuthbert, written in Latin. First three lines in red (rubric) is followed by two lines of monumental script in multiple colours, after which the text itself continues in usual brown ink.

One of the most astonishing - like really astonishing things - @theul.bsky.social in Cambridge. The Moore Bede - prime manuscript of the first English history, given by the King-Elector George I in 1715. Seems to have spent time at the court of Charlemagne. Isn’t that just multiple wow?

Fellow medievalists, esp. charter people, a question out of ignorance: how common was it that single people were 'exchanged' as Heloise and Emeline were in the act below (source: The Cartulary of Blanche Countess of Champagne, ed. T. Evergates, p. 58). Thanks!

Good morning #Academicbluesky. What has been published on the effect on current public debate/life of using terms like 'fascist' and 'communist' to describe political adversaries? Thanks!

This is desperately sad news. Björn was one of the kindest and funniest people in our trade, as well as a brilliant scholar. He will be terribly missed - and live on in our fond and grateful memories.

In this "Teach Yourself to Be a Missionary" compendium you get short snippets from authors like Isidore or Jerome but also this little FAQ: Who was the first pope in Rome? Peter. Who built Rome? Romulus. You know, just in case people ask questions! 4/
