Provocative talk by @cnewf.bsky.social here at UIUC last night! He argues that humanities intellectuals need to defend the importance of our research especially right on our own campuses, where the discourse of “getting students a higher wage” is laying waste to half the university
Chris Newfield, recent head of the MLA, always gives a great talk about how humanities ideas intersect with the structure of university budgets A University Faculty's Three Obligations
Critique of Knowledges (yellow)
Institutional: Fiscal Engagement (green)
Knowledge Addressing Public Needs (blue)
These are the 3 things we do. We’re great at the yellow, bad at the green, and could be better at the blue. University rationales often start at the blue & care least about the yellow

Sadly, we're only able to remember minority mistakes. The mistakes of majorities are shadowy, elusive, as hard to remember as last night's dreams. Come to think of it, were they mistakes at all? No, on second thought, it was very complicated at the time, and perhaps we were right in principle.

(Seriously, though: we've memory-holed how confidently wrong people were on this topic, because it's a case where *most of us* were confidently wrong. We should adjust priors so a lot more of the probability mass is on "I don't know" and "I could well be surprised.")
