Retired public servant in Oxford. We tend our allotment, listen to Bach. I make glass. Our civilisation is crashing. Curse those who opened the gates to Evil.

Monumental long and monumentally boring piece. Trouble with Subtack is there's no editor.

Medieval history is fascinating because they didn't think like us. No need to travel to the stars for the challenge of grappling with alien intelligence. We've got it right here, in our past.

In Oxford we know this. Tourism enriches the few, hotels, cafes, Airbnbs. It impoverishes the many, overwhelming public spaces & services, denaturing your town, turning it into a false, transient nothingness. People everywhere are in revolt against excessive tourism. It's our home they're selling!

In a mad, bad world, the decision to arrest, prosecute & send to jail as terrorists thousands of our best people for silently opposing genocide & the misuse of antiterrorism law by an authoritarian Zionist clique is the sickest, stupidest thing I've seen any UK govt do and god knows I've seen a lot.

The guy organized a coup before, which killed people, and was never punished for it. Of course is going to do the same again, why wouldn't he? We are not a couple of weeks away from a landslide Democrat victory, we are a couple of weeks away from the end of American democracy

Humans are shifty buggers. They'll say one thing to pollsers, and perhaps mean it, but next day think the exact opposite, and vote that way.

Curious to know at what point PR advantages right as much as, or more than, left. Not that it's about party advantage! Oh no. It's all about justice and fairness and goodness. Isn't it?

Just back from a pleasant few days in Siracusa, Sicily. Grant, it's a total tourist trap. But we met no one keen to see refugees children drown in the Cannel, or to bomb Iranian shoolchildren, or watch a paralysed man be shot to death live on tv, or shoot gazan children for fun. So, quite a relief

I've read the report. It says hardly anything about Russian interference in the referendum

It looks as if either the security services were too politically cautious to carry out a proper investigation in regard to the brexit referendum, or they do have a proper assessment but we have not been given it. Either way Burnham, having made this statement, needs to say more about the evidence

Thank you. On the Brexit referendum, it could hardly be less helpful.

Assuming Burnham's allegations of Russian interference in Brexit are based on intelligence , he should publish it, and shame the Toroes and Reform

Well, he has said, several times, that he had such a theory. As it's the key issue, it seem reasonable - indeed, essential - to ask what it is.

Of course. I was on a more limited point: debate between public v private provision seems minor alongside current challenges. Issue best settled empirically not ideologically. Water public, because a monopoly. Car making private, because free competition and State would lose.

Never understood this fixation with houses. Your old, need to go into care home. Therefore, your home is no longer needed. Cos you're now in a care home. What more obvious than that you sell your now useless home to fund your care home?

As an atheist, I am no fan of Islam, but we have far more to fear from soi-disant "christians" in power in Washington and Moscow [how Christ would have condemned them!].
