40% of *everything being shipped everywhere on Earth* is fossil fuels Just an absolute laughing-stock clown-show of an energy source. This is laughably absurd, why do we treat this like it's normal and good Fossil fuels are a satirical fuel www.irena.org/-/media/File...
Global shipping transports fossil fuels and runs on oil: 40% of shipped products are fossil fuels or derivatives, while 99% of international shipping’s energy demand is met by oil-based fuels.

Sorry, but I find your comment a bit naive. Authoritarian regimes force compliance by turning ordinary citizens into informants, creating a culture of fear and self-censorship long before official penalties are ever issued. This is what we should be worried about.

The solution is very simple: treat algorithmic recommendations as editorial, so that when those recommend hate speech, lies, and harmful content, the platforms are liable. I hope to see that before I die or civilization collapses, whichever comes first.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)

Solar shading addresses the temperatures, and that would encourage MORE fossil fuel burning. But CO² emissions must go down anyways, to reverse ocean acidification, marine ecosystems, and all that. Right?

I don't think we can call that a solution. It sounds good, but who would control the satellites? Imagine you-know-who threatening countries not just with tariffs but with basically a thermostat for Earth's temperature. It would still be a geopolitical problem.

I'd argue that algorithmic recommendations are the root of the mess we're in. Without it, we wouldn't have so many conspiracy theorists, radicalisation, political polarization, etc. It was time for platforms to become responsible for what they push in front of people's eyes.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon.
Title: Bertrand Russell, 1933

Panel 1
Bertrand sits at his desk, puffing on his pipe. He says 'The problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people are so full of doubts.'

Panel 2
He gets up and walks over to a mirror.

Panel 3
Pondering his reflection, he muses 'But if I'm certain about this...'

Panel 4
'Does that make ME a fool or fanatic?'

Panel 5
He walks back to his desk.
His reflection in the mirror says 'Talking to yourself in a mirror seems pretty doubtful to me.'
'Good point.' says Bertrand.

I’m not sure why we still have a monarch. It seems like a medieval anachronism to me; a demonstration of inherited status and the the pinnacle of an entrenched aristocracy. And I’m really not sure why our monarch has gone to the US to stand next to another man with too much power, land and money.

The borders of the first panel connect with arrows to the second and third panel. In the second panel, the father says yes. In the third, he says no. Arrows are then see connecting the second and third panel to panel 4, where both responses converge to the daughter's reply "You're so wise, dad" implying she would say the same thing so matter his response.

With all that’s going on in the world right now, I feel it’s really important to draw a distinction between ‘religion’ and ‘faith’. I’m not religious, but I have a humanist worldview which prioritises rational thought, empathy and kindness. I know many people of faith who hold similar values. 1/5

That's true. And I apologise, I think my reply was unnecessarily rude. I had another look now, but I can't answer the "How much does it matter to you if a tech blog seems AI-assisted/AI-authored?" because I think my answer would depend on whether it's AI authored or just assisted.

Julian @juliangaramendy.dev · 21/04/2026
The first two questions are conflating AI-assisted and AI-authored. Only later it mentions non-native English speaker authors. THIS made me immediately stop reading the survey. I'd personally stop reading AI slop, but I wouldn't if I detected (somehow) it being used for grammar and or spelling.

The good thing is that you can keep iterating on your docs, using a new LLM session every time. In a way, turning one of the annoying things of LLMs (they don't carry "learnings" from one session to the next) to our advantage. I think.
