Today the STM launched its redesigned bus network. Modifying 80+ lines and impacting a zone of 600K+ residents, it is the STM's most significant network revision ever and among the top 3 in Canadian history. Among the benefits: more frequent lines. It was a privilege to contribute to planning it!

The decline of Stack Overflow, presumably in favour or directing coding queries to LLMs, appears to be reversing rapidly (!!).

I calculated change in access to jobs by transit before and after Winnipeg's bus network redesign. 🚍 The median resident experienced an increase of 4% in access to jobs within 45 minutes, according to my analysis in R. The redesigned network gets more people to more places within the same time.

Took a mulo cargo bike out today for a costco run 🚲 Was quicker, cheaper and more pleasant than using car share which is how I usually go. Great initiative that just launched this month in Montreal @mulocargo.bsky.social

Si on dépasse une profondeur de neige de 54cm à Montréal, ce serait le montant le plus important de neige au sol qu'on aurait vu depuis plus de 50 ans !

Pretty funny how the company whose AI technology is considered a "black box" compared to the remarkable openness of DeepSeek is called "OpenAI" www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I had some fun with the weathercan library today in R. Two illustrations of how much milder Canadian winters have gotten : days with sub-zero temps in Vancouver and maximum snow depth in Montreal.

Oh it's totally bonkers! The project is called the Celestial Beacon and it was heavily pushed by the mayor Drew Dilkens who loves his vanity projects. The bill was ultimately $10M+. Meanwhile, City of Windsor wants to cut $1.4M from the Transit Windsor budget for 2025.

In the good old days of Twitter, I made sassy commentary on the misplaced values of political leaders in Windsor, Ontario (my hometown).
tweet: "All you need to know about the municipal politics in Windsor is that the people in charge today believe that spending $7M to put an old streetcar in a glass box in a park is essential but investing in an actual public transit system is a "fairy tale".tweet: Windsor is a city run by people who believe $500K for a planned & well-needed express bus route is "nice to have" but essential are $7M for a bizarre monument to public transportation, $4M for a golf course club house, and $1.9M extra for police.

I just deactivated my account on X. Before departing that space forever, I wanted to return to a tweet by @qagggy.bsky.social from a few years ago that really stuck with me:
tweet : "Most of the solutions to climate change actually make life better, not worse. So we should be moving towards that better future with great joy and haste."
