The 2025 edition of the Rainer Bauböck Essay Award on the Global State of Citizenship is now open for submissions. It is open to recent graduates with a master's or equivalent degree. The topic this year is "How will geopolitics affect future citizenship laws and policies?" 1/2
The second edition of the annual GLOBALCIT - Rainer Bauböck 2025 Essay Award invites submissions on the question of: How will geopolitics affect future citizenship laws and policies?Essays can explore themes such as the weaponisation of citizenship attribution, potential restrictions on dual citizenship for nationals of specific states, the role of geopolitics in extraterritorial citizenship offers (e.g., for investors, kin minorities, or emigrant ancestry), and whether norms like mutual recognition of citizenship and the human right to nationality may shift towards more discriminatory
practices.
• Eligibility: Early career researchers (Recent master's graduates, PhD researchers, or those within 3 years after the award of a Doctorate).
• Essay Length: Up to 3,000 words (excluding references, which should follow standard academic citation practice).
• Language: English in a non-technical style accessible to public readership.
• Deadline: 31 March 2025, 23:59 CEST.
• Submission: Email the essay, CV, and a photo to globalcit@eui.eu.
• Prize: €1,000, publication on the GLOBALCIT website and EUl Cadmus repository, and an invitation to present at a workshop in Florence (8-9 May 2025).
