Eastman Johnson October , 1873 Oil on canvas mounted on board Worcester Art Museum
Painting of an older man with white hair sitting outside against a tree with a walking stick against his leg and a large book in his hands on his lap. He’s falling asleep, the sun is starting to set, and the changing leaves and grasses around him, with some few colorful standouts, are fading into an autumnal glow

Why not indeed?
A screenshot of a paragraph from a recent article in Saveur on new single-subject cookbooks as follows:

Some such tomes aim to introduce the reader to the joys of less ubiquitous ingredients. Lane Selman and Margarett Waterbury's Radicchio: A Celebration of the Beloved Italian Vegetable tells the "human and natural history" of the bitter chicory, along with instructions for how to grow it and cook with it. Selman is the founder of the Culinary Breeding Network, an initiative that rallies scientists, farmers, and chefs to geek out over new produce varieties. The book gets weird in the best way possible, with profiles of Italian growers and recipes including gnocchi with radicchio pesto, radicchio with prosciutto gratin, and chocolate-radicchio cake (why not?).

Rhode Island at its finest
Providence was to be her first port of call in the United States, and she went by way of Genoa, Naples, Palermo, Madeira, and the Azores-nineteen days. This was the direct express route; other Fabre liners had more circuitous itiner-aries. When I got back to Providence, I was met by a fellow worker on the Journal, who helped me smuggle five botles of champagne and several of cognac past the customs men and prohibition agents. I knew I was home again.

Many such cases
From A.. Liebling, “A Good Appetite”:

During the next winter, while I was away in Egypt or Jordan or someplace where French papers don't circulate, he died, and I did not learn of it until I returned to Europe.
When Mirande first faltered, in the Rue Chabanais, I had failed to correlate cause and effect. I had even felt a certain selfish alarm. If eating well was beginning to affect Mirande at eighty, I thought, I had better begin taking in sail. After all, I was only thirty years his junior. But after the dinner at Mme. B's, and in the light of subsequent reflection, I saw that what had undermined his constitution was Mme. G.'s defection from the restaurant business. For years, he had been able to escape Mme. B.'s solicitude for his health by lunching and dining in the restaurant of Mme. G., the sight of whom Mme. B. could not support. Entranced by Mme. G.'s magnit-icent food, he had continued to live "like a cock in a pie"-eating as well, and very nearly as much, as when he was thirty. The organs of the interior-never very intelligent, in spite of what the psychosomatic quacks say-received each day the amount of pleasure to which they were accustomed. and never marked the passage of time; it was the indispensable roadwork of the prizefighter. When Mme. G., good soul, re-tired, moderation began its fatal inroads on his resistance. My old friend's appetite, insufficiently stimulated, started to loaf-

the insidious result, no doubt, of the advice of the doctor whose existence he had revealed to me by that slip of the tongue about why he no longer drank Burgundy. Mirande commenced, perhaps, by omitting the fish course after the oysters, or the oysters before the fish, then began neglecting his cheeses and skipping the second bottle of wine on odd Wednesdays. What he called his pipes ("ma tuyauterie"), being insufficiently exercised, lost their tone, like the leg muscles of a retired champion. When, in his kindly effort to please me, he challenged the escargots en pots de chambre, he was like an old fighter who tries a comeback without training for it.
That, however, was only the revelation of the rot that had already taken place. What always happens happened. The damage was done, but it could so easily have been averted had he been warned against the fatal trap of abstinence.

I’ll always associate this song with the months after Katrina when I listened to it over and over and looked at Giovanni Martinelli’s Death Comes to the Banquet Table, on loan from NOLA to Worcester at time of the storm and kept in a closed gallery for months until it could return
17th century Caravaggesque painting of a group of revelers seated around a richly laid dining table reacting in horror as the skeletal figure of death appears at right, apparently coming for the male figure nearest to him, for whom he is offering to pour a glass of wine

Louis Monza Corn Eaters Reunion, 1944 Oil on canvas Harvard Art Museums
Modern painting in a sort of naive, almost cartoonish, style of five men wearing hats sitting indoors around a table eating corn. There’s a platter of corn, jugs, and cups on the table and a dog underneath. The walls behind them are golden brown and tge frame is painted with what looks like autumnal floral decoration

Why you gotta hit me like that
A page from Autumn by Ali Smith reading as follows:

A minute ago it was June. Now the weather is September. The crops are high, about to be cut, bright, golden.
November? unimaginable. Just a month away.
The days are still warm, the air in the shadows sharper. The nights are sooner, chillier, the light a little less each time.
Dark at half past seven. Dark at quarter past seven, dark at seven.
The greens of the trees have been duller since
August, since July really.
But the flowers are still coming. The hedgerows are still humming. The shed is already full of apples and the tree's still covered in them.
The birds are on the powerlines.
The swifts left weeks ago. They're hundreds of miles from here by now, somewhere over the ocean.

Picture of a gallery label with the following text:

Wayne Thiebaud

I remember attending my first graduate seminar with Wayne Thiebaud, who looked out at his new crop of students and explained that he and his faculty peers couldn't teach any of us how to become artists, that we had to assume that identity for ourselves and get on with making our work. Thiebaud added, almost cryptically, that there were some very practical things he could teach us that might be useful during our years at UC Davis. What followed was a remarkably lucid lecture on where to buy the best and cheapest salami, cheese, olives, coffee, fruit, bread, cakes, wine, and more in the region, things our professor insisted would significantly enrich the quality of our lives. As Thiebaud's extremely detailed talk continued, I recognized many of the Sacramento-area delis and bakeries he was describing from having grown up in the area, and I soon realized that he was sharing something more than a shopping list with us.
He was giving his students direct insight into the very subject matter that was inspiring his own art: the frosted cakes, cream pies, lollipops, trays of herring and sardines, and other foods he transformed, through the skilled application of paint onto canvas, into tactile and sensuous visual representations. I took this first lesson at UC Davis to heart as a genuine gift, a true sharing of what inspired my professor, and proceeded later in the week to pursue a share of his suggested homework.

Not only or exactly thinking about this part of the Lex Walton interview but also not not thinking about it
There's a lot of these people that are content with making placid and beautiful things-and that was fine sometimes. But right now, how can you look at what's going on around us and be content with use all this money and all this platform to make placid, beautiful, detached things? Has it not been enough for you? Have you not gotten fed up with everything around you yet? Do you need to see more people get killed for you to feel something other than a wristwatch at the himbo dome, or whatever fucking bullshit?
What are you doing? Luckily, some of these people are very good writers, but there are a lot of people who are incredible songwriters who relish in this vagueness and unspecificity.
But I'm seeing them make a move towards more specificity, and that has been very heartening. That song that Cam Winter did for that charity compilation, "Warning"-that's fantastic. It makes you want to do things that, I probably shouldn't mention over the phone to people that deserve it. That's somebody that's has that same kind of platform and is using it for work that expresses the awful nature of our current moment.

And then getting surprised when the chokepoint gets choked and nothing much happens. In actual fact, my experience with professional logistics people is that they bloody love it when supplies of something vital are interrupted.
Scrambling around to secure alternatives is the fun part of the job, when they get a chance to demonstrate how clever and indispensable they are. It's a welcome distraction in a career that is otherwise basically trucking.

Or maybe there's a genration of entrepreneurs who've caught Al brain. Chatbots are the C-suite's ultimate yes-men - able to buttress egos
by condensing information their users don't care to fully understand while avoiding questions they don't want to consider. They'll never say the plan is dumb.

The dad energy flowing through this article on amateur solar advocates could power another 10,000 homes
change. "Making money is not why I got into this. Lowering the cost [by converting his finder's fee to a discount] for people drives adoption, and if I was taking a fee, how could people trust my recommendations?"

I was reading this interview with Sam and Louise Sullivan and suddenly it got too real
SAM: I Irish-exited Providence, where I was living, just because I was like, "I need a job.
My health insurance is running out." I was 24 or something. And then I got a job working as an English teacher. I'm a failed poet. So I was teaching English and stuff. And then I got a job, like a legit job teaching high school English lit at this prep school that I work at now, the Quaker school. It was all money-related. I was biking around Providence trying to go get a check for something I'd already done. I was putting my bike on the front of the RIPTA. It was snow and ice and just like crusty dogs everywhere, and I was like, " gotta get out of here."
