Fire severity shapes landscape heterogeneity in Mediterranean forest ecosystems - Landscape Ecology
Context In Mediterranean forests, the increasing frequency of high severity fires poses a challenge to current landscape management. In addition, these areas are experiencing a generalized process of ...

🔥🔥🌲🌳How do pre-fire landscape conditions influence post-fire dynamics? And how variability in fire severity affects changes in landscape structural heterogeneity? Check it out in the great paper led by @miguelangel-blanco.bsky.social 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

How expensive are natural disturbances for Europes forestry? I'm super excited, that @natclimate.nature.com decided to publish a Research Briefing by @rupertseidl.bsky.social and me related to our recent paper on the cost of disturbances. Check it out here: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Climate change raises costs for European forestry - Nature Climate Change
Natural disturbances, such as windthrows, pest outbreaks and wildfires, pose a major economic threat for the forestry sector. By coupling spatially explicit ecological and economic forest models, this study assesses the costs of natural disturbances under current and future climate conditions for all of Europe.

What makes German forests vulnerable to wind & bark beetles? 🌲💨🪳 👉 Elevation, Norway spruce %, precip. & slope. Will it get worse? 👉 Models predict a slight decrease by 2070 (RCP4.5 & 8.5). Great MSc by Rémie Matta, a wonderful co-supervision with @anastritih.bsky.social 📄 doi.org/10.1016/j.ec...

Several small reserves hold more beetle, spider and bird species than a single large reserve of the same size in Central Europe, with habitat heterogeneity being an important driver. First PhD paper by Anne Huber (not on Bsky), w/ @sebseibold.bsky.social. doi.org/10.1016/j.bi...

Small protected areas are often more easy to install than large ones, but they have a high proportion of their area close to the boundary. Are there boundary effects for important indicators of biodiversity? Find out more here: doi.org/10.1016/j.bi.... First PhD paper of Aikio Erhardt (not on Bsky).

While most of Europe faces a heat wave, Catalonia is experiencing “sixth-generation” wildfires, triggering a pyrocumulus cloud with wind speeds over 125 km/h. I feel a special connection to this region: the first wildfire I studied occurred in this area tinyurl.com/yy2usjv4 x.com/agentsrurals...

Great week at the #SIBECOLAEET2025! It always feels like a family reunion: catching up with ex-colleagues, friends, and meeting new people. Discovering exciting ongoing research in ecology across the Iberian Peninsula (and beyond). Also: amazing food and stunning nature!

Setting forests aside doesn’t stir up more trouble—in fact, it calms the chaos 🌳 Happy to see my first PhD chapter out! 📝 Setting aside forests for biodiversity conservation does NOT amplify disturbances in temperate forests of Central Europe. besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
