1 in 175 people are estimated to currently be infected with C-19 in England. That's 330,000 people - a third of a million. Cases are still rising and, to make matters worse, Flu has put in an appearance earlier than usual. Plenty of good reasons to take care and try to stay healthy.

Yes - always listen to You and Yours while I'm making/having lunch, and full of useful info. Bad decision BBC.

It's alarming, and worth mentioning that the actual numbers will be higher as, unless policy has recently changed, only people with severe respiratory symptoms are tested. This misses those with milder symptoms, others with non-respiratory symptoms caused by C-19 and all infections in the community.

Not sure which Christmas she's talking about, as they're nowhere near being in power. That aside, there are financial implications, plus the fact that they'd be responsible for performance and not able to to blame anyone but themselves if/when things don't work out.

An estimated 1 in 234 people are currently infected with C-19 in England. That's around 250,000 people, equivalent to the total population of Plymouth. All indicators show a rise in both the number of infections and hospitalisations. The health risks remain, and not just for the elderly..

Most landlords have 'buy to let' mortgages which are usually renegotiated within a 3 year period. If their interest rate goes up at the same time that rent rises are controlled, they may decide that selling up is a better option. So, good for tenants, potentially bad for supply of rental properties.

Agree - they need a strong media performer in charge and, while he's done a lot for the Lib Dems, his low-key delivery style and campaign stunts will have turned off a few potential voters. There are some talented people in the party now, so time for a change.

Farage is going to struggle to come up with evidence of some, if any, Brexit benefits. If all he's got is the 'it hasn't been implemented properly', he'll have to explain how it should have been implemented. He won't be able to because he doesn't do detail, only meaningless soundbites.

Most think Covid is respiratory disease, but it's well documented that it's also vascular. The virus can travel through the body and affect any organ, inc the brain. So, short answer is yes to vascular dementia but also yes to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease etc, and not just in the elderly.

He's already said publicly that he can get away with anything. Maybe it's about time a way can be found to prove him wrong.

Impressive speech, but Burnham's previous comments about the unfairness of those, especially dementia sufferers, having to sell their homes when moving into residential care hasn't resulted in a policy to stop that. Costs will be lower, but many will still need to sell their home to cover care fees.

It'd definitely be a start, but candidate selection also needs looking at imo. We need more MPs with real life experience/skills, rather than career politicians and those with ambitions to improve their own lives rather than the lives of their constituents. Current MPs unlikely to embrace that idea.

Knowing Johnson's lack of attention to detail, it could well have been ignorance but either way completely irresponsible to state, bearing in mind the outcomes for so many businesses. As for Davis, turning up for a high level Brexit meeting with no notes says it all. Completely clueless.

Judith Lee @judithlee33.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Another blatant lie told by Johnson was that Brexit wouldn't place a higher administrative burden on businesses. It's proven beyond doubt that all the extra red tape has crippled some firms, especially smaller ones, and prompted others to move their base to Europe to save their businesses.

Unless the NHS starts to take infection control seriously, cancer patients will remain at risk of getting infected in hospital and other settings. I often see posts about unmasked staff and lack of clean air/ventilation when patients have chemo/radiotherapy. This recklessness is a national scandal.

31.4 million people with £600 more a year each would give a much-needed boost to the economy. Some may be used to reduce/pay off debts, but a significant sum would be spent. Businesses could hire more staff, so less unemployment, plus more VAT, NI etc for the Treasury. Why the reluctance to do it?

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

I thought the reported 1 in 91 people infected with C-19 in the US was a misprint so checked and saw that it was correct. Big variations, eg 1 in 15 in Texas & 1 in 25 in Florida. Recent UK estimates are that 1 in 378 people infected, described as 'moderately high'. The US figures are mind-boggling.

Agree - reducing income tax by £600 for every taxpayer would be popular and would stimulate some much-needed economic growth. Should also lead to an uplift in VAT payments to partly offset the reduction in income tax receipts, plus a likely increase in job vacancies as business picks up. Win, win.

If the price cap increases anywhere near 24% in Jan 27, it'll hit many pensioners very hard. They tend to be at home more than families, meaning high energy costs. The state pension increase doesn't take effect until April, meaning extra financial pressure at a time when more energy is being used.

A rise in State Pension of 3.5% is a max of £440 a year, less for many. A typical worker on £37000 with a 3.5% increase would have an extra £1300, less tax. There are rich pensioners, but many depend solely on State Pension and barely make ends meet. The Resolution Foundation hates pensioners btw.

Just had a look at the Reform policy on crypto, and it's a list of measures designed to attract the wealthy crypto crowd, inc lower Capital Gains Tax (10%) and accepting donations in Bitcoin and other crypto currencies. Transparency is clearly of little interest to them.

He's also lucky that the current UK rules on donations are totally inadequate, both regarding the amount donated and what the money will be/is being used for. He knows that, Farage knows that, and this will continue unless & until political donations get closer scrutiny and appropriate consequences.

Yes - there's been very little testing for C-19 in both medical settings and among the public for some time, so it's impossible to know the number of infections and deaths. Govts around the world wanted this to be the situation, and they got their wish.

There are people with terminal illnesses who have valid reasons to want to end their lives, but there are many others who fear they may be subjected to efforts to coerce them into making that decision. Kelly sums this up perfectly: ".... but we must ensure disabled people have the right to live"

2 years ago in a museum in Athens, I met a wonderful Jewish woman who told me, “With my right eye I cry for the Jews of Israel; with my left, for the Palestinians.” I’m pleased our government has finally taken some action. The violence needs to end, then a peace process can begin.

The stick wielder also grabbed another woman by her hair and tried to drag her across the floor. Assume he'll be prosecuted, as well as the man who kicked a protester who'd been pushed to the ground. Disgusting & shocking spectacle, made even worse by the apparent approval of some of the onlookers.

I don't think Farage wants to be PM. He's spent most of his political life being an agitator & disrupter, who prefers to do as little work as possible. Running Reform and experiencing real scrutiny clearly doesn't suit him and he's getting increasingly rattled as the difficult questions keep coming.

That's brilliant - having texture inside homes, whether for walls or furnishings can enhance the way we feel about our own private spaces. Using texture on the outside of buildings would add interest/variety to the boring developments that are often foisted upon us. Definitely needed here in the UK.
