How about this - Labour councillors have to condemn their party's complicity in genocide before others will work with them. Sign a pledge to say they'll hold their leaders to account for crimes under international law. I'd see them in the Hague. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Omniscient narrator is now rare, but Maggie O'Farrell's is stunning in The Hand that First Held Mine. She describes a garden with no one in it. We're told things about a character that they don't know yet. We change POV without a head-hop. www.justrightediting.co.uk/post/your-ti... #writingcommunity

I can highly recommend the 'Short Works' series of stories on BBC iPlayer, and if you're also interested in local politics, you won't regret the 15 minutes you take to listen to this one, read by the very dry Rebecca Front. #writingcommunity www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

My daughter gets fed up with being told she only agrees with a thing because she's a socialist. (With sarcasm): 'That's how this works. I'm a socialist because I think the principles of socialism are correct. I don't have genetic predisposition to socialism. I wasn't assigned socialist at birth.'

The trick is to weave what you know into the story, if it fits. What you know isn't the story, though. Your story has to work on its own. #writingcommunity

'For decades now there has been a Palestine exception to free speech. Since the Hamas attack on 7 October, however, that has ramped up massively... Despite all this, however, more people are coming to understand that what is happening to Palestinians is not complex, it is fundamentally wrong.'

There's a time on hot days when it's cooler to shut all the doors and windows in my triple-glazed, super-insulated house (today, 11 am). Insulation may not be sexy but it sure makes life comfortable.

For me, an important aspect of historical fiction in particular is the theme and message of the book as a whole. What do you want your reader to say it was really about, in a nutshell? This was a book that provoked a lot of these thoughts! #writingcommunity #editing

There's a rich scope for imagining what all the animals would do in this world. Dolphins? Such party animals 😅 #writingcommunity
Conversation on Tumblr about how a world where magic is a raw force of nature, animals would figure out how to use it. Crows and ravens are smart enough. Dogs would cast projectiles to chase them.

What a wonderful read. This book's habit of changing perspectives was a bit frustrating at first - because it drew me so closely in to each POV that I didn't want it to switch. The way each part of an emotional story is gently teased out with different voices is masterful. #writingcommunity #editing

What sparks a story in your head? I've realised different people have different things in their heads before they start writing. For me it's often 'I wonder what it was like living at a time when...' Then I add some characters, and then I might think about writing something down! #writingcommunity

Updating my WIP: I think the story is basically sound, but needs more stakes. And there's one thread that's resolved too easily - it needs another obstacle. I love writing scenes but find plotting harder - getting a second opinion has really helped. #writingcommunity

There's so much in the topic of viewpoint. Do you head-hop? Transition gently between POVs? Use limited? An omniscient narrator with their own voice? Slip into neutral and leave your reader at sea? Go deep, so there's no narrator at all? It's all in here. #writingcommunity bit.ly/49WKzD9

Do you ever admire an author more for their values and what they say in real life than for their writing? I've just bought Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness (what a great title!) because I'd love to love her work more - even though I don't read much science fiction. #writingcommunity

Nature is fun. Patience is needed, though! About three months ago I took some cuttings from a jade plant and stripped some of the leaves. They looked a bit daft just arranged on top of the soil. But look! Tiny new plants!

Delightful use of 'lampshading' in the BFG production at the RSC - where the writers are letting you know they know a plot point is illogical and make a joke out of it because they're not going to change it. #writingcommunity
