A data collection mission that began in 2012 is finally released as AVONICHE. Designed as a companion to AVONET bird trait database and updated to Avilist taxonomy, it’s an Open Access dataset providing updated diets and a detailed breakdown of foraging behaviours used by all bird species. 🪶🌐

A Black led Marxist-Leninist activist organisation would be amazing again. Resurrect the Black Panthers, build a Rainbow Coalition like Fred Hampton dreamed, and show people that we can all be proud of our cultures and ethnicities, while also standing in solidarity with other working class peoples.

People are going to try and lure you into debates about whether Maduro was a good guy or not and the thing is, it doesn’t matter for the purposes of discussing whether violent kidnappings and extrajudicial murders by the US government are ok. No, they aren’t! End of convo.

Counterpoint: there is not a single damn way for this to go right. When an act is fundamentally corrupt and villainous, executing the act well does not make it better.

Ah, the time of year when I find myself pondering the deep questions of taxonomy in the grocery store. Graham Crackers should be found in the aisle of: Crackers? Cookies? Baking? Candy? Other? What say you, I want to know!

News (sometimes) covers the big things, like judicial hearings and press conferences. But even though we know that there is more suffering behind each of those, it just doesn't hit people unless they hear what is actually happening on the ground. This is critical work.

Crockett: I am tired of the white tears. When you compare me to Marjorie Taylor Greene or me to Lauren Boebert, there is no comparison. So the only people that are crying are the mediocre white boys that have been beaten out by people that historically have had to work so, so much harder

It's kind of amazing that we showed we could cut child poverty in half for roughly 100 billion/year (absolute peanuts in a 7 trillion dollar budget), did it for a year, and then just stopped doing it.

As someone working in conservation and ecology, I want to add that learning to see the world differently, with new eyes, is one of the most beautiful and rewarding aspects of ecological training and expertise. We live in a world of wounds AND wonder, both of which are often invisible to others.

Ok, by request, here are my talking points for the seminar on countering misinformation. Note that this is a graduate course for STEM (almost entirely neuroscience)grad students & postdocs so while it's not preaching to the choir it's definitely teaching them a new song. 1/

This is a good reminder that a poll is a combination of who people believe they will vote for (actual survey) which has a margin of error but is fairly solid and then sampling of those based on who the polls think will actually vote. The model is the least reliable and most opaque.

4 years ago there was so much we didn't know. Couldn't know. But didn't pretend we didn't know anything, that we didn't have the ability to make better, more informed decisions than we did.

This is a problem I've seen first hand many times not only in academia but also private industry. Our rewards are often aligned towards answers we desire rather than process we need. We need to reward people for doing the work the right way, not giving us the answer that feels best at the time.
Story time:

In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.

Here's what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.

What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass.

This is just one of the reasons we need a guaranteed income program. Everywhere it has been tried, it has worked. The monthly payments on the earned income tax credit during covid lockdown? Biggest reduction in childhood poverty ever. We can and have done it. Now make it permanent.
