It is 100% not inevitable. It is only inevitable if we don't pivot away from the commercialization of scholarly publishing. Diamond does not mean free, it means the cost of publishing is handled much like the cost of research-- with the benefit of not paying for profit extraction.

Thanks for picking up on this point. I was told not to write it because it would lead people to think that diamond is not working. But that's not at all the conclusion we draw when analyzing the data.

PERSPECTIVE: despite some crowing that this was 'inevitable' etc, the article covers the period 2009-2026. In 2021 the estimated number of Diamond OA was 29,000 journals. Over the 15 year period covered, 440 journals have flipped. As a proportion of the 2021 number, that's 1.5%. Hardly an exodus.

Thanks! Reaction has been interesting. Some diamond oa advocates don't like we're pointing to problems or enabling a narrative that it's unsustainable. But our intent was to name the phenomenon (Fractures!) and to call out that systemic supports are needed

This is very contested. I think there's value in bringing governance into the definition, but as I've written elsewhere, governance of diamond journals also defies classification...

This is clearly an illustration of how difficult it is to stay ethical in a publishing world oriented towards revenue generation. The conclusion is indeed that more support is necessary for non-commercial and community-led journals, not that publishing is an inherently commercial activity.

a pretty good way to gauge the conversation is whether people are talking about harm or risk harm is about what's happening now already risk is about what could maybe happen in the future and basically the whole ai cult scene is in agreement that possible risks are more important than current harm

I like the notion of ASP Challenge w/ payment information in general is that it is not systematically collected. The WG sidestepped this question by proposed a separate taxonomy for it—it 100% needs to be tackled and infrastructure put in place to collect data on it.

and sorry if I was overly sensitive. This is out for community consultation (or at least a bit of a vibe check) and so feedback is really welcome. I think I would better understand your questions if they were accompanied with a sense of whether the overall approach works/makes sense.

Most importantly, we recommend that the questions of business models needs to be addressed separately from the questions of access. A single classification system that blends both does not make sense and should be replaced. We are trying to contribute to this.

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
I think it offers a concrete pathway for—in machine actionable way—addressing the questions of versions/copy that I _think_ you are raising. But I think it would be foolish to think we can recommend how EVERYONE will aggregate (which depends on what schema you use, how you collect your data, etc.)

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
I think you are well aware that I work very closely with librarians. I genuinely believe this is a very concrete proposal, that is machine actionable, and that offers a way of more accurately studying questions of access.

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
The labels we are proposing can be applied to all of those. I am not trying to be obtuse, but I don't understand your criticism. We are recommending a classification system that addresses many of the challenges with the colors—which are well beyond what version/copy they are applied to.

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
Yes, but all these things are schema and implementation specific. I suspect OpenAlex, Dimensions, Lens, etc. will all have different approaches to how they treat copies and versions. I think the best we can do is offer guidance on how this classification system could be applied to aggregations.

perhaps some lack of clarity in the writing (authoring with that many people is hard!). But the 3-dimensions are suggested to apply to each version of the work (closed or open). We also propose labels for aggregating statuses at the Work level.
100
Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
the classification system captures a point in time. Keeping track of historical information depends on the schema you are saving into. Will the implementation save and timestamp any time it confirms data? only on changes? how often does it check each work? That's implementation, not classification

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
I'd argue that those fall under "Work Type" and should be separate from the dimensions we used to talk about access. Plus, consider they don't apply across output types. Sometimes, however, those are partially defined by venue (which we refer to as "Location").

The proposal is that each location would get classified on the three dimensions. then comes the question of how you aggregate if you want to give a label to a work

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 10/09/2026
We acknowledge this as an option question, and speak to it in Section 6.3 (Temporal Tracking). My thoughts (not necessarily the rest of the WG), is that temporal tracking is important, but it is an implementation problem—separate from that of finding good classifications/labels.

Juan Pablo Alperin @juancommander.scholcommlab.ca · 09/09/2026
The WG recommends a three-dimensional classification framework: * Access: is freely accessible to read or is closed * Location: is available at the publisher or on another platform * License: carries an open license, a closed/restrictive license, or has no clearly identifiable license
