Check my latest working paper! I study the effects of the avocado production in Mexico on non-lethal crimes. I find that the increasing production has increased the number of extortion cases, while other crimes (threats and kidnappings) are less robust. #EconSky #EconTwitter #AcademicSky

Check my latest working paper, joint with Monia Gruber. We ask whether the presence of criminal markets and actors shapes access to financial services using data from over 120 countries. Our results point to a lot of heterogeneity based on the type of group and region. #EconSky #EconTwitter

How Chile's maternity leave extension boosted women’s employment
Extending maternity leave from 12 to 24 weeks in Chile increased mothers' formal employment for up to three years after childbirth, with no negative medium-term effects. This suggests that maternity leave expansions can strengthen labour market attachment in middle-income countries, particularly for mothers with limited access to childcare and weak pre-birth employment records.

These article is an invitation to include a gender perspective into the studies of conflict in Mexico. My findings show that women are also likely to be victims of various crimes and policymakers should improve prevention mechanisms for gender-based violence. End of 🧵

Juan Carlos Angulo @juancangulo.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
🧵 One of the main takeaways is that young women are more at risk than young men. Women between the ages of 12 to 18 are going missing more often than their male counterpart. My findings suggest that a positive association between missing women and cartel entry.

Juan Carlos Angulo @juancangulo.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
🧵 Female victims of homicides represents about 10% of all victims and differ in number from the feminicides, as these are two different categories. The entry of the first cartel is associated with more female victims of homicides but not with more victims of feminicide.

Juan Carlos Angulo @juancangulo.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
🧵 Homicides increase after the entry of the first cartel in a municipality, for both male and female victims. But, female victims are concentrated in certain states.

Juan Carlos Angulo @juancangulo.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
🧵 I use three publicly available datasets that include the gender of the victims of homicides, feminicides and disappearances. Using an event study design I show differential effects by type of crime and by gender.

But, we find that regular buyers of avocados are not affected by the exposure to information...negative or positive! 🧵(6/n)

Juan Carlos Angulo @juancangulo.bsky.social · 30/09/2025
Yet, not all the news headline give the same result. It depends on the topic of the negative news headline. Our respondents reacted more with the news relating avocados with criminal groups than with the environmental damages. 🧵(5/n)

We find that positive news increase the WTP; and negative, decreases it. However! The driving force is the latest piece of news they receive. A positive information followed by a negative decreases the WTP, and a negative followed by a positive increases the WTP. 🧵(4/n)

Some participants were presented with 1 news headline and some with 2 in total. This created 9 possible treatment arms in our design, while it allows us to compare both between- and within-subjects change in their willingness to pay (WTP). 🧵(3/n)

We presented 1 of 3 possible news headline to some participants and none to others, and we asked them whether they were willing to pay $ X dollars for a bag of 4 avocados. After their answer, we presented a 2nd different headline and asked again using the same price. 🧵(2/n)

“Nongkrong” is Indonesian slang for hanging out. It means relaxing with friends, with no specific agenda. If you search for “Nongkrong”, you’ll get a bunch of cafes. Predicated on a culture of permissibility, where women can loiter with male & female friends 😀☕️
