We didn’t stop caring about beauty. We stopped finding it profitable to exploit craft people, keeping them poor, in the same way. Most often, ornate design was a rich person exploiting the poor to show off their wealth. It became less savory to be so ostentatious (rationing WWI and WWII helped).
