Another thing he seems to want is to create division from Democrats. And this is likely to do so. If Democrats gain control of the House or the Senate, and Trump doesn't send the checks (that he wasn't going to send anyway), MAGA will blame them for the lost money.

This is fascinating. I think the students will get so much out of it. I've been teaching exclusively online since 2020, and I see advantages to it, but the possibility of doing things like this makes me want to look for ways to teach in person again.

My job has no research component. Whatever research I do is my own choice. But I'm affiliated with a university, so it never occurred to me to present myself as independent.

I am so sorry to hear that. I love the variety of his being that you were able to put into a single sentence.

I suppose that's no more pointless than a lot of what I've seen people share online over the years. That was especially true back in the 90s, when people seemed to be trying to figure out what they could do with this medium. But it also brings to mind the YouTube "Who's watching in 2026?" thing.

"Language is not only the explainer of thought, but, in a very great degree, the instrument of thinking; and a speaker or writer is often working his own way to his conclusion while he is leading others." Benjamin Humphrey Smart, 1852. If we give up our language to GenAI, we give up our thinking.

Amidst everything that's happening with CCCC and NCTE, the work continues. My students are thinking and writing and sharing ideas, and learning new ways of thinking and writing and sharing ideas. Some things have seemed pretty stable in the 35 years since I taught my first writing class.

I'm seeing a lot of suggestions that CCCC should simply take up residence in MLA. And I get why people would say that. But I'm not keen on the idea, myself. MLA has never been my place.

I will never choose to affiliate with @ncte.org, given the absolutely disgraceful way they have chosen to dissolve CCCC, a 70+ year organization central to the discipline of writing and literacy studies. I am so disappointed in the NCTE leadership. May they come to view their actions with horror.

Worth pointing out that in 1956, a children's book adaptation of Homer was doing "woke" casting.

Update: I have a meeting for next Friday. The subject line of the email is "Meeting about CCCC 2027 next Week." There were no details in the email. I'll share once I have the meeting with the NCTE presidential team.

I know. A lot of my friends have been trying to make sense out of it. I'm not sure there's sense to be made. But Kathleen Blake Yancey has shared some information on FB that seems promising.

This is the program from the first time I attended the Conference on College Composition and Communication. I then saw the CCCC as my disciplinary home, and felt that I'd just walked through the doors to meet people and find my way around. I did not dream of the day those doors would be locked.

Even beyond the organization as a formal entity, I see this as having a real effect on the discipline. We're not just a bunch of random people who happen to study writing.

Question for MAGA: If your definition of "America" allows you to praise Columbus for discovering it, why does it not allow you to accept Puerto Rico as part of it?

I wish I were still teaching a unit on the rhetoric of music. I may want to drop something I have and replace it with that. When I did teach it, and we went over old protest songs, students often asked why we don't have music like that now. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWKS...

Teachers have a major role here. I teach courses in argumentation. That includes Rogerian approaches, in which speakers or writers explain another side's view before giving their own. If they can't explain it well enough for classmates with that view to accept it, they don't get credit for it.

"If a visual is just decorative, no need to provide alt text." That's a line from a composition textbook. What do you think? Is it justified?

We have to remember that, traditionally, an incoming administration awards the various constituencies that got it elected with some sort of representation. So the tech bros get Elon, anti-vax freaks get RFK Jr, dog killers get Noem, white nationalists get Hegseth, pedophiles get Gaetz...

I've always loved dramatic weather--thunderstorms, blizzards. I've never thought of wind by itself as qualifying. But standing in my kitchen, looking out the window, and watching the wind whip the trees around in my front yard, I realize I need to add it to the list. It's sort of mesmerizing.

It's also interesting given that FYC classes, taught well, guide students in the kinds of thinking and writing they'll need to succeed in their future courses--including literature. They're a critical part of a university education. If you teach them, so are you.
