"My entire career is, in a way, a response to A Song of Ice and Fire" Sanderson: what if a series didn't whip ass

allison @jstmalicious.bsky.social · 05/09/2026

also this isn't remotely a bad thing the combat is very kcd-esque but MUCH SMOOTHER and the valhalla similarity is one variety of side quest and vaguely the map clearing elements (which is also similar to the ghost games)

What have I been doing? I haven't read a novel since May besides my re-read of blacktongue thief ,,, ostensibly so I could read my review copy of the sequel which I still haven't done

ppl arguing abt world-building on twitter and im like now that i've read harrison's "essay" (online post) against world-building AND erikson's counter-rant i think everyone should have to read both both are correct and i have crits of both as well

Here's my thing...I loved THE ANGEL OF THE CROWS but Addison/Monette left the "this started out as kind of a fic btw" for her author's note.... in the back of the book. Which imo is where any info abt a published novel being a fic or based on a fic should stay. Not in marketing and publicity lmfao.

i get diversifying your publisher via imprints but also kinda feel like the publishing/reader version of that one viral video about how you can't tell if someone is part of a subculture anymore bc so many people dress goth/emo/alt/butch etc

That said, when you di a whole press release about how your books will be wild and genre-bending and unusual but the key launching author is a white guy who writes popular, easy to read, uncomplicated, standard fantasy, I feel like you've already missed your own point.

allison @jstmalicious.bsky.social · 21/12/2025

i look at what genres i'm reading and kind of insane how little genuine fantasy i'm reading but then it's like well....the publishers are still prioritizing romant*sy on their lists so i turn to weird and depressing other fiction and horror and historical jdkf;ksj

my biggest character flaw in regards to anything fictional is easily my 2 and a half decades-long targaryen obsession

Tossing myself into the sea bc hbo finally figured out how to make the targaryen dudes look good and surprise it's entirely getting rid of the shit wigs and casting the first man w a good face since harry lloyd The targaryen women still need a wig fix but they have zero face problems

Reading all of the Viriconium stuff rn and loving it LOVING IT but it's also funny to me that big enjoyers talk abt it like it's extremely esoteric (storm of wings is definitely WEIRDER) but I'm finding it very readable and IN VIRICONIUM especially is very fantasy of manners adjacent which i adore

really deranged (to me) that Tor don't put any real design work into their best books (beyond a beautiful base cover design/art/illustration!) but no interesting end papers, no embossed title/author font, no under-jacket embossing, no jacket paper quality variety

another reason Dems can't build an antifascist coalition is because they're already part of the fascist coalition. This is an incredibly common pattern for the second party in a late capitalist two-party system, which always seem to simply become a racheting engine of fascism with two factions
