Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026At the end of the day, the reason for all this is to reassure people that you’re not broken for not understanding. Folks have different needs when learning, and that’s normal. So if it’s for little you or you now, you deserve to learn the way you learn best, which includes giving grace 💜 030
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Now, years later, I can look back on it and really pick it apart. I wasn’t soft, weak, or incapable. Just a guy whose brain functioned a little differently. My professor viewed that as a failure. 120
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026I know throwing around the word ‘ableism’ sometimes feels like pointing fingers, but I genuinely feel putting those PDFs in front of me and telling me that was all I’d get from him was an obstacle my brain couldn’t work out. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026I’ve spent upwards of a decade thinking back on how that made me feel, but none of my inability to retain the information was because of my lack of trying. He made me feel that I was incapable, which isn’t true. I’m able to learn. I’ve learned a great many things. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026The problem wasn’t not wanting to participate. I wanted the hands on experience. I wanted to practice. I wanted to LEARN. It was the class structure and the professor’s insistence that if you couldn’t handle the way he ran his class, then you were the weakest link. 121
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Lately, I’ve been looking more into the possibility of having AuDHD. It’s been an ongoing journey of reframing how I organize my life, and it’s really brought past struggles into perspective. The way that professor ran his classes were hard for my brain to process, so it shut down. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Short answer: Yes. I wanted to make films. I wanted to tell stories. I wanted to craft whimsy and magic and capture it to share. Why did he think that if he made it so hard to learn and participate? 120
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Other students in the class who were struggling sat together to explain questions on the midterm, as if the midterm itself was a study guide for the final. Somehow, I passed the final. I can’t remember how I did it, but I did it. His question still haunted me. Did I want to be there? 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Eventually, I was fed up with it. I wasn’t learning, I read and re-read the PDFs, but nothing stuck. There were no opportunities for discussion or practical application. I ended up asking him to rent a second camera for class so I could sit in a corner and walk through the manual on my own. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Students who were vocal got to direct. Students who understood the PDFs got to light. The rest got to watch. I failed my midterm. He sat down with each student to grade our tests one-on-one. I watched him fail me. He then slid the test over, telling me that at this rate, I’d fail the final. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026The tests contained information pulled from those PDFs. In class, we barely discussed them. He assumed we retained the information, and could immediately apply it. This was a practical film class of maybe 10 students. There was also only one camera. Students who were quick got to handle it. 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026“You don’t participate, you don’t put any effort in… be honest, do you think you can survive in this industry?” This is coming from a professor that didn’t teach. He had us bring in flash drives on day one to drop a file folder full of PDFs for us to read the entire two semesters we took his class 110
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 06/06/2026I had a professor in college that was incredibly harsh. The moment in question happened while we were standing on a NYC sidewalk. We were just outside the school’s main building, and he was smoking a cigarette. I forget the lead up, but he asked me, “Do you even want to be here?” 110

You just don't need to have 2 hours of yapping and 25 minutes of wrestling on a 4 hour show to achieve storytelling excellence lol 1144

Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 17/10/2025Friday the 13th (1980) I HAD to watch the original, especially since it's a classic. For something so tame compared to today's horror, I loved it. It was a simple premise that was executed well. I also knew nothing about the twist. Great watch, and can't wait to see the others. 010

Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 17/10/2025Nosferatu (2024) I’m a simp for muted colors, so the style was up my alley. A traditional vampire film and remake that feels intimately unsettling. However, it felt a little slow in places, and felt more like a chance to play in the environment than tell the story since it’s well known. 120
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 17/10/2025The Lighthouse (2019) Another one on my list strictly for atmosphere and aesthetic. I appreciated how simple the story was. It made it easy to see where things were headed, which gave little details a place to shine. Queer monster fuckers of the ocean variety (like myself) had a good time. 100
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 17/10/2025Trick ‘r Treat (2007) I love a good single storyline with branching perspectives, especially when each storyline is its own rollercoaster. Definitely a classically-styled horror movie that’s definitely dated in terms of subject. I personally think the evil is justified in this one. 100
Jason Larock 🪴 @jsonlarock.bsky.social · 17/10/2025The Cabin in the Woods (2011) Had this on my watch list, and didn’t know what to expect. It felt more like a slasher sci-fi thriller, which is wild to me. Also INCREDIBLY self-aware at times, which was refreshing. Very fun to see this take on a ‘Young People in a Creepy Cabin’ story. 100
