Vacancy alert! Prof. Ineke van der Ham and I are looking for a post-doc (from early 2026 on). For this project we aim to investigate why some individuals often get lost: a condition recently coined atopia. The project involves behavioral, eye tracking and potentially fMRI. See dewegkwijt.com

I’m excited about this collaborative project by @sunw37.bsky.social, @johanwinn.bsky.social, and many other talented contributors. Read about how our @hhmijanelia.bsky.social team imaged thousands of neurons in mouse hippocampus as mice learned cognitive tasks over several days: hhmi.news/4hXIp7r

Mapmaking in the mind: new research details how the brain builds mental maps of the world
To see how cognitive maps form in the brain, researchers used a Janelia-designed, high-resolution microscope with a large field of view to image neural activity in thousands of neurons in the

AI advancements are rapid. The question is not if, but rather how and when AI will be adopted in education. Promoting critical thinking in our students should be our main focus, before the dead internet theory becomes a reality. Read more in my recent blog: www.leidenpsychologyblog.nl/articles/rap...

In a recent article in BBS Murayama and Jach suggest that we should unpack the black box and look at motivated behavior as the outcome of mental computational processes. Franz Wurm, Ineke van der Ham and I believe that this approach is too limited: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Paper alert! In our new paper "Towards a characterization of human spatial exploration behavior" in BRM, we introduce a novel, fine-grained approach to analyse 3D exploration behavior. We tested our method in a sample of n >400, and validated it on the Silcton dataset. lnkd.in/dsehNVqp

I am devastated to share the news that Professor Eleanor Maguire has died at the age of 51 after 3 operations and proton beam therapy for a spinal tumour. She was internationally renowned for her work on navigation, episodic memory and brain plasticity. #neuroscience #psychology

Together with Ineke van der Ham, Jos van der Hage, and Angus Mol, we received a Grassfields grant to create a 3D-learning platform called SpatialMind to promote spatial abilities! 🧠 We are still looking for a researcher for this project. Let me know if you are interested!
