“J'étais un homme. Un nez, une bouche, deux yeux, un cœur, deux bras, deux jambes, une bite: on appelle ça un homme, jusqu'à nouvel ordre, non? J'avais aussi des sentiments, alors? Qu'exigeait-on de plus? Il fallait présenter d'autres certificats?” Martinet, JEROME p. 147

i was curious what the front cover for the orig. 1978 sagittaire ed. of martinet’s JEROME looked like. they used a close-up BW photoportrait of martinet. not sure how that seemed like a winning idea. (not that the book wasn’t critically doomed anyways)

Nick Tosches, Country: The Twisted Roots of Rock n Roll: « [Oscar Davies] had nothing to lose, and he told it all: a great, glorious, scandalous Who Fucked Who of country music, full of homosexuality, Pedophilia, and motel drunk-fucks. The CMF allows absolutely no access to these tapes. »

the modernists busted for “obsessively postponing our graduation by coming up with ever more ordinary truths about painting upon which we might be lectured (It's a rectangle! Wow! But it doesn't have to be a rectangle! Yikes!), thus infinitely deferring the public's accreditation as cultural equals”

this book is mostly essays, personal & cultural, but there’s one piece in here, « a glass-bottomed cadillac », where he just ventriloquizes Hank Williams & it’s great too

there’s a lot in this book to savor or remember hickey recounts a singular afternoon in his youth that he accompanied his musician dad to a house jam « it was the best, concrete emblem I had of America as a successful society & remains so » beautiful notion

this memoir is very good, a very unusual & varied life recounted seemingly without pretentiousness or embellishment. (the author is the musician behind that band The Eels that first gained prominence around 1996) i read more memoirs than novels these days
