Hey, remember in 1783 how Philadelphia built a triumphal arch to celebrate the end of the Revolution and then God used the celebratory fireworks to burn it down and kill people and injure its designer, who came to regard it as punishment for his hubris? Anyway. www.amphilsoc.org/item-detail/...
reconstructed drawing of Charles Willson Peale's Triumphal Arch, which burned in 1783. Drawing by Lester Hoadley Sellers, 1969, from details reported in newspapers. In the collection of the American Philosophical Society

I say again, any "pause/pacing/contemplative silence where AI CEOs think about what they've done and promise to be very good boys from now on" that doesn't result in ACTUAL enforcement mechanisms to hold them Several-Hundred-Billion-Dollars accountable any time their product fucks up is nigh useless
Screenshot of posts from me:

Chris, they trained a system to hack & got scared when it hacked. This is on human beings not being able to logically think through what they've built & what they then trained & told it to do; they'll never "solve alignment," because they can't get what human values they're trying to "align" "Al" To.

Hold the HUMANS accountable for what their systems do. The humans' companies and individual humans themselves.

Semi regular reminder that when (white) men declare the end of humanity they usually mean the end of their dominance.

NASA picture of the day today is a real 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿beauty! This is a composite image of the ~5000yo Callanish Stones on the Isle of Lewis. The amazing Giuseppe Petricca has only gone and photographed the Sun at noon there, every few days, for a whole year. #Dedication 🔭🧪👌 ℹ️: science.nasa.gov/image-articl...
The imposing Callanish Stones stand talk with their shadows spanning out across the glass. It's a super clear sky, but looks cold. Above the central stone is a strange figure-of-8 shape of dots. This is the location of the Sun, at noon, on various different days across the year.

Even if this weren’t a completely transparent pretext because he things “NATIONAL SECURITY” is a set of magic words that let him do anything, no competent military advisor would suggest storing all of your munitions in a giant target standing on its own in the middle of a traffic circle.

I graduated med school in 2014. I was taught-and saw-how hard melanoma was to treat, like a death sentence Since then, new treatments have made it possible for people w/ the most advanced melanoma, like Jimmy Carter, to live to 100! We are killing ourselves by letting them destroy American science

For those who want to follow along (& I have to say, at this point, I have no idea how many days this will take), I want to give a "deep dive" into how historians of medicine (#histmed) who work on the pre-modern/pre-print era actually go about researching a question. Today, I just discovered this:
The first part of an entry for a 13th-century English cardinal, Hugh of Evesham, who is said to have died in Rome in 1287 as the result of either "pestilence" or poisoning. Below is both the French text and an English translation.
"Hugues Atratus de Evesham. - Né à Evesham (Angleterre), il fréquenta les Universités de son pays natal, puis celles de France et d'Italie, se livrant surtout à l'étude des mathématiques et de la médecine. Il obtint des prébendes ecclésiastiques en Angleterre et fut appelé à Rome, en 1280, pour donner son avis sur des questions médicales. On a prétendu, à tort selon Marini, qu’il avait été le médecin du pape Martin IV, qui le fit cardinal."
"Hugh (the Black) of Evesham. Born at Evesham (England), he attended the universities of his home country, then those of France and Italy, focusing especially on the study of mathematics and medicine. He secured ecclesiastical prebends [appointments] in England and was called to Rome in 1280 to give his advice on medical matters. It is said (erroneously, according to Marini) that he was the (personal) physician to Pope Martin IV [r. 1281-1285], who made him a cardinal. The latter part of an entry from Wickersheimer's 1936 biographical dictionary of medieval French medical practitioners, for a 13th-century English cardinal, Hugh of Evesham, who is said to have died in Rome in 1287 as the result of either "pestilence" or poisoning. Below is both the French text and an English translation.

"Il mourut à Rome, en 1287, du poison suivant les uns, de la peste suivant d'autres[2] et fut enterré dans l'église Saint-Laurent « in Lucina ». Il composa divers ouvrages dont deux de médecine, Canones medicinales et Super opere febrium Isaac[3]; le seul qui ait été conservé est un Sermo in dominica Septuagesime [4]."

He died in Rome, in 1287, from poisoning according to some, from "pestilence" according to others, and was interred in the church of Saint Laurence in Lucina. He composed various works of which two were on medicine: "Medical Canons" and "On Isaac [Israeli's] Work on Fevers." His only work that survives is a sermon on Septuagint Sunday [the ninth Sunday before Easter].

the week of the MI senate primary, a group of river tubers on the Muskegon went missing for three days after they got in the water not realizing the river only flows in one direction and doesn’t just take you back to your car. They’re more representative of voters than anyone on here.

THESE are the real "existential risks" of "AI": People almost Dying because other people trust bullshit engines because said people have been sold a bill of goods as to how "powerful" "AI" is instead of understanding that its bullshit comes from the same place as its seemingly factual outputs.

Having spent 6 months in a hotel with my 2 cats 11/25-5/26 due to catastrophic water damage from upstairs neighbors I feel for you & your family! The only thing worse than water is fire. I got a new condo--kitchen, bath, floors, ceilings, walls, paint--but it was another 3 months to normal again.
