This is brilliant. 100% agree. Reposted and commented on. Thanks. See also the use of "passed" as a euphemism for death, albeit one with cultural significance and importance.

When people started referring to death as "passing" -- and yes, I know that within many conservative Christian communities "passing" has long been used a gentle term for death -- there was trouble coming. Unalive is its unfortunate follow-on. Proudly use direct and unapologetic language.

The co-option and subversion of English and other languages, and the subsequent impact on peoples' behaviors and values had been known and understood for a very long time. Those of us who saw it begin anew in the 90s aren't surprised with the outcome.

@anildash.com has created and worked a space at the intersections of technology, popular culture, design, race and ethnicity for thirty-ish years. He understands far better how to use language and technology to persuade. He's right on here. Please read and share this, widely.

Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

When did we stop teaching "The Emperor's New Clothes" and how did it disappear selectively from some significant fraction of the population's experience?

*sigh* Being successful, and even having the right belief and doing the right things doesn't always make a person savvy or tactical. And the Left in the US has always had a correct goal/wrong approach problem, IMO.

I really don't think people in the US appreciate how close we are to a tipping point into political violence, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. The casual acceptance and increases of sexual violence, misogyny, and racism have been indicators. Choir, preaching to: I know.

No, we don't have a problem with political violence in the United States. Or misogyny. Or sexual abuse and sexual violence. /bitter sarcasm Political and sexual violence are indicators of the risk of ethnic cleansing and genocide. Here. In the US.

Think rust. It accumulates, you can clean it out, but it always comes back and all you can do is keep paying attention and cleaning it out. Rustoleum, Alleve, stretching, and a lot of "fuck you." Neil was right then, and is right now.

This. At this moment the transparency of the hubris and hegemony is clear: we're wealthy and powerful, and we can do whatever the fuck we want, for our benefit and to your harm. That said, the imperiousness of other "elites" can be just as offensive and alienating, if not intentionally harmful.

This work has broader implications than addressing the complications of a multilingual mobile work force. It dovetails with the administrative burden research of @donmoyn.bsky.social and others, and needs to be considered when considering legislative and programmatic changes.

Agree, but with a comment: reasoned argument has been undervalued in the US and much of the Anglophone world for decades. The rise of Murdoch-inspired "tabloid media" and the replacement of journalism with public relations has made real public debate on issues like AI difficult if not impossible.

This. Extremism (of any variety) is almost always a response to injustice, material want, and real or imagined existential threats. The trillions of dollars spent on the "war on terror" instead invested in economic and social development would have reduced all of the above.

The center right in most liberal democracies has misjudged the threat of the far right and the threat it represents to civil society and the rule of law. The CDU, the Conservative Party in the UK, and the Republican Party in the US thought they might control and coop fascists. They failed.

This is the correct approach. Extremist political and social movements -- including religious fundamentalism -- should not be accepted in the public sphere. Extremism of any type is inherently exclusionary and often demands destruction of or retribution against others, and is inherently unjust.

The decision not to invite observers from the OSCE puts the U.S. alongside Russia and Belarus, while the Justice Department prepares to deploy its own poll monitors.

Trump suggests letting Iran ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego at campaign event

Much like after the 2020 election, Trump’s attempts to manipulate his way to victory will depend on whether or not he can get enough people in enough positions of influence to go along with his schemes. We must not help him by perpetuating the Trumpist assertions of dominance and inevitability.

If we're going to denaturalize and deport people for sex trafficking they hid on their citizenship applications, is there a reason this would not apply to Ghislaine Maxwell?
CHILD SEX ABUSER’S CITIZENSHIP REVOKED AFTER NATURALIZATION FRAUD CONVICTION

Cyril Domaquik Clemens, a Liberian native, was convicted of three counts of indecent liberties with a child after confessing to sexually molesting a young child.

The abuse began before he naturalized, but he concealed it during the citizenship process, fraudulently obtaining U.S. citizenship.

Important thread. Read all of it. The villainization of specific groups and individuals who are members of those group is a prelude to ethnic cleansing. JD Vance was villainizing Angie Nixon last week. This is serious and dangerous territory.

The "pulling up the ladders" actions of many upper middle class and wealthy people in the US is appalling for many reasons. The open embrace of systemic inequality and "not our kind, dear" behaviors and values was not something I expected growing up in the 1960s and 1970s.
