Recently I have been thinking about how we should use jokes as a means of distinguishing humans from AI, but I just bombed an attempt at a joke online with another person so yeah, maybe that's a terrible idea.

I know. Me too. I thought it could be a fun bit. In my head you would counter with all the ways crows are metal and murderous and AI would soothe us and we would both be in on the irony of you joking and me pretending you were not.

Crows are sustainable. They don't pretend to be people. They are loyal to their families. They are beautiful. Crows bring you little shiny presents. We have lived with crows for a long time and each side seems to fear and appreciate the other equally.

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

The writer Camus gave a speech in 1957 where he talks about another generation's view of what seemed like a doomed world, and his own answer to that, which was the responsibility and privilege of telling that story. I find it hopeful. www.nobelprize.org/prizes/liter...

Wow, what a symbol of pettiness, ignorance, and hollow bravado: "Historically, the atrium of the State Department has flown flags of all the countries in which the US maintains an embassy...Today...every single overseas flag has been replaced...There are more than 190 US flags arranged in a row..."

I definitely think you can grieve a book. You can grieve a future, a hope. It’s something I think we don’t acknowledge enough, or build enough rituals for.

I’m not sure if it’s clear to the public that most policymakers and scientists have left 1,5C behind and are planning for warming that is closer to 3C. That is a major difference.

Honestly after the pandemic, growing authoritarianism, and the accelerating climate crisis I don’t see how any of us are even able to function. It’s been a time. Maybe some old timers can tell me about how it felt like this in the 60s but we all survived anyway?

Thank. You. I’m sick of the whining about “division.” The problem is not that some are pushing back against authoritarianism, making others uncomfortable. The problem is that this is a crisis and some are not yet uncomfortable enough to face it.

A few weeks ago, US Citizenship and Immigration Services released quarterly data on the legal immigration system through June. The data presents a stark picture of an agency going through a period of total dysfunction. As of June, net application backlogs have risen by 80% since Trump took office.
Chart showing total net USCIS immigration application backlog, from Q4 Fiscal Year 2023 through Q3 Fiscal Year 2026. The data shows backlogs were slowly dropping from net 4.3 million applications in Q4 FY 2023 to 3.8 million in Q3 FY 2024, after which applications began to rise again, increasingly every single month until Q3 FY 2026, where they stand at 7.7 million.
