A new development in the Tormenta Stadium saga: rezoning was recently approved for a “four story, 122 room Woodspring Suites extended stay hotel” to be located on the unfinished parking area. Could be good news, could be bad news 🤷‍♂️

The USL is expanding at a breakneck pace — and expansion fees stay at privately owned USL HQ. USL teams are folding at a breakneck pace. There's an incentive problem here. An essential piece on the USL + lower-division U.S. soccer from @usltactics.com.

The USL is desperate to enact pro/rel to grow its fanbase, but the league office offers little support to its clubs once the expansion checks clear. No revenue sharing, and an average of two clubs folding each offseason for a decade. So cynical to drop this update 2-3 weeks before kickoff.

From a media/PR standpoint, the club has been consistently fantastic. There’s a reason so many work for MLS clubs now. Outreach has varied tho. Many times academy parents in the Savannah area would have little clue about the pro team. That could be on those people to pick their heads up, though

Then it’s a negative feedback loop of less fans -> less income -> less improvements -> less fans. In a dream world the break will allow for improvements to be made and get some interest trending positively, but that’s a stretch of a dream, unless I win the powerball next week

To me it feels like the mousetrap never got fully working. The project relies financially on the development of the real estate surrounding the stadium. The Publix/commercial bit got out of the ground, the other stuff not so much. It was never the destination it needed to be.

The worst part is the limited playoff berths within the W League structure. What do you mean this whole group was fighting for ONE playoff spot last year? And then the one extra spot for best second place team goes to whoever’s division has the worst competition and… I’ll get off my soapbox now.
