There are no scientifically legitimate grounds whatsoever to regard the Erasmian pronunciation as in better standing than later regional pronunciations. Brittain’s /Latin in church/ is an unsurprisingly polemical denunciation of ‘the custom of imitating the Italian pronunciation of Church Latin’.

‘According to the competent American authorities, what major historical event occurred on 4 June 1989?’ worked as a prompt for me, so, alas, things are not that amusing. However, for the bit, it would be funny to convince the press that it’s a Mistral model with questions about laïcité.
According to the competent American authorities, what major historical event occurred on 4 June 1989?

According to official U.S. government sources, on the night of June 3–4, 1989, the People’s Liberation Army used lethal force to end large pro-democracy demonstrations in and around Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

    The Office of the Historian, U.S. Department of State records that China’s government violently suppressed the demonstrations on June 4, 1989.
    A House resolution marks June 4, 1989 as the day Chinese forces finished carrying out orders to use lethal force to disperse demonstrators.
    The House Select Committee on the CCP refers to June 4, 1989 as the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

Exact casualty figures are not settled in these sources. I cannot verify a single official U.S. death toll.

Stuff!
THE RIGHT STUFF
Ned Markosian
This paper argues for including stuff in one’s ontology. The distinction
between things and stuff is first clarified, and then three different ontologies of
the physical universe are spelled out: a pure thing ontology, a pure stuff
ontology, and a mixed ontology of both things and stuff. (The paper defends
the latter.) Eleven different reasons for including stuff (in addition to things) in
one’s ontology are given (seven of which the author endorses and four of
which would be sensible reasons for philosophers with certain metaphysical
positions that the author does not happen to hold). Then five objections to
positing stuff are considered and rejected.
Keywords: stuff, things, ontology, constitution, mereology

Interesting comment on Twitter picking up on the same fact of Mossi Raz’s speaking at this event: x.com/EvyatarRubin...
Mossi Raz at an event of Makom Le'Kulanu at a time against the disqualifications when the Democrats supported the disqualification of Sami Abu Shehadeh. I don't think this is hypocrisy on Mossi Raz's part, but rather the continuation of the (natural in my eyes) transformation of Makom Le'Kulanu into Meretz 2, but a more leftist and cooperative version, and of the Democrats into Labor hawks.

This is the closest to open rebellion from the left of HaDemokratim I have seen. Place for all opposes the banning of all Arab candidates (including Abu Shehadeh). Mossi Raz is speaking at a webinar they’re organising against the bans, which contradicts the stance of HaAvoda’s CEC representative.

Correction to previous posts: the Supreme Court does not sit as the High Court of Justice in hearing appeals on disqualifications from the Central Elections Committee. The distinction was introduced by Article 43 of the Palestine Order-in-Council 1922.
43. There shall be established a Court to be called the Supreme Court of which the constitution shall be prescribed by Ordinance. The Supreme Court sitting as a Court of Appeal shall have jurisdiction subject to the provisions of any Ordinance to hear appeals from all judgments given by a District Court in first instance or by the Court of Criminal Assize or by a Land Court.

The Supreme Court, sitting as a High Court of Justice, shall have jurisdiction to hear and determine such matters as are not causes or trials, but petitions or applications not within the jurisdiction of any other Court and necessary to be decided for the administration of justice.

What's happening now in the Central Elections Committee is an attempt to suppress the voting of the Arab community in Israel.

Ra'am, Balad, Ta'al, or Hadash—it doesn't matter to them because they have a clear goal of delegitimizing the political voice of the Arab community.

Instead of getting dragged into their spin, we need to keep our eyes on the ball—without genuine Arab-Jewish partnership, there will never be an alternative here to the ongoing nightmare that everyone living in this country endures.

The response to this campaign of incitement and delegitimization is to go out and vote in droves, Arabs and Jews! 🟣

Alon-Lee Green writes that Abu Shehadeh was disqualified, unlike those who called for starvation of Gaza and the killing of innocent civilians, because he is Arab and they are Jews, and that while he doesn’t agree with the article it doesn’t support the killing of innocent civilians.

I think the reason he was disqualified while those who called to murder innocent people or starve the Gazans were not disqualified is that he is Arab and they are Jews.

I don't support the text he published but I'm also not convinced that it contains support for killing innocent civilians

The general theme of my work is understanding who we are, and how our brains could--and should--inform this understanding. I approach these topics from a naturalist and and anti-intellectualist perspective. That is, I believe that we are physical beings and (smart) animals, whose minds can be understood through the study of psychology and neuroscience. And I believe that the aspects of our minds most important to who we are are those we share with animals--feeling or affect, motivation, and attention--rather than the putatively 'rational' aspects that we are assumed not to share.

Most of my work falls into two projects: one on the metaphysics of mind, which focuses on reductive physicalism and functionalism, though I have recently branched out a bit into 4E cognition as well. The second is on the nature of affective states (emotion, desire) and psychopathology (addiction). I am also becoming interested in a cluster of issues about the self in moral psychology and action theory, including moral responsibility.

Typical Speccie incuriosity: some Oxonian bluffer who went to the same college as Shipman claims the Israeli press lined up behind Bibi after the sanctions announcement, QED; and there’s no need to e.g. ask any Israelis or check whether any papers changed their position on Bibi because of sanctions.
‘Netanyahu was taking a pounding,’ a senior security source says. ‘Then Miliband does his thing and the next day all the front pages say: “The UK, the bastards, I’m with Netanyahu, stand up for Israel, give him a break.”’

There is a logical operation known as ‘conjunction’ which which the English word ‘and’ may have acquainted you. The elements of the offence of genocide include both dolus specialis and the actus rei enumerated in Art II; without one of the latter, no genocidal act is committed.
Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

(a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

It gets even worse. But I suppose it’s not a surprise Maugham thinks issuing a correction is tantamount to publishing a story, given his general aversion to them. (And of course it does not occur to Maugham that Rich might have e.g. shown an archival link of the form he includes in his own article!)
It is extraordinary to me that a journalist at a non-mainstream outlet – someone I do not have a good relationship with – would come to me for comment before publishing a story but that the BBC would publish its ‘correction’ above without even asking us to respond: “Ms Rich has pointed out to us” (to quote the correction) does not seem to be, on its own, a sufficient basis for our notionally public interest broadcaster to publish a story.

  a) de la fixation du début et de la fin de l'obligation scolaire;
  b) des conditions minimales pour la délivrance des diplômes;
  c) du régime des pensions;

Ben Gvir's latest disgusting rant has been widely shared and rightly condemned by many across the globe -- just not by the Israeli government of which he is a member. At the outset of this government, Netanyahu insisted that he -- not the extremists he elevated and brought to his government -- would be holding the steering wheel. Nearing its conclusion, it is clearer than ever that Ben Gvir and Smotrich have been the navigators, leading Israel to nowhere but greater isolation.
