Yes. I’ve amended the post and updated the VA calculator. As you say, it makes no sense that the benchmarks are lower for PAG 20. Annoyed I didn’t come to that conclusion last week. In a rush to get the post out and there was so much info swirling about.

*VA calculator* found an error. A stray comma in a lookup table. Now corrected. Also I’ve deleted PAG 20, which overlaps with PAG 19. Come to conclusion PAG 20 is a remnant of the 2023 (same benchmarks) and shouldn’t be there. The guidance is a mess. www.insightinform.co.uk/2026/09/14/2...

This is a v. diff cohort to 2023 mind. 2023: pre-covid KS1, just post covid KS2 2026: just post-covid KS1, very post-covid KS2 They were never going to be comparable.

I expected them to go up by 1-2 but in some cases (esp maths) they have gone up by way more for some PAGs.

From what I’m hearing, I’m getting impression that issues with KS2 progress go beyond just incorrect classification of High PA group. That there may be problems across the board. Telling that Primary Accountability Technical Guidance still hasn’t been updated (usually out at start of year).

Thinking about the data checking exercise which shows individual pupil progress scores and PAGs, I’m interested to know what DfE will do in 2028 when prog measured from RBA. Will they keep the black box closed or reveal pupil start points?

Error in prior attainment calculation has resulted KS1 EXS pupils being classified as High PA. Will be corrected but not til Dec, which means provisional data (incl IDSR) will have incorrect group data. check-your-performance-measures-data.education.gov.uk/hc/article_a...

📊 43.7% estimated to achieve full marks in the MTC. 📖 82.1% estimated to achieve the expected standard in the PSC (Y1). These are the latest national estimates from Insight. @richardselfridge.bsky.social and @jpembroke.bsky.social discuss how these results compare to previous years: buff.ly/3ehCfLn

Assessment matters. But high-stakes accountability can turn it into performance theatre. The issue is not individual teachers or schools. It is a system that rewards threshold focus and public signals over diagnostic use. We should protect assessment by lowering the stakes around it.

From Insight data, it looks like there’s going to be a big increase in % achieving full marks in MTC. 37% last year; probably over 40% this year.
