#Brewers appear to have taken CC Sabathia’s kid in the 20th round of the MLB Draft. Pretty cool! Also, I’m old.

This aligns with what historians of automation & A.I. have found throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. What has followed automation and A.I.? More work (speed up) and the degradation of that work. We need to investigate the *quality* of jobs created, not just the raw number of jobs.

Major League Baseball is gonna use its monopoly power to increase profits, de-risk its financial investments, and further limit the freedoms of its workers (and even its potential workers)? No way!

MLB has long wanted to outsource its player development to the NCAA so that it can spend less money on minor-league teams (and players). Its owners desperately want what the NFL has. I assume saving money by delaying free agency for guys is also a big factor here. MLB cares little about the game.

I’m currently re-reading Katherine Moran’s THE IMPERIAL CHURCH (2020) for an article I’m writing, and I’m consistently reminded of how innovative and smart it is. #SHGAPE

My #SHGAPE colleagues will enjoy learning that Muscular Christianity is back. There may be more recent books on this, but I first learned about late-19th- and early-20th-century Muscular Christianity from Clifford Puttney’s book: www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978067... Might be time for a re-read.

Pope Leo: "Every boat that arrives does not bring only migrants; it brings with it a question: what world have we built, if so many brothers must risk death to seek life?"

From my perspective, the inaugural @shgape.bsky.social conference was a smashing success this week. I enjoyed meeting and learning from many new colleagues. I already regret not being able to attend more talks/panels! #SHGAPE2026

It’s been official for a bit, but I’m thrilled to join the History Dept at Ripon College. This fall, I’m teaching: • Conspiratorial Thinking in U.S. History • Immigration & Migration in the U.S. • 19th-century U.S. History I can’t wait to start and couldn’t be happier to return home to Wisconsin.

I wrote a book about bureaucratic violence and if there’s one thing I wish everyone knew right now, it would be: The people most harmed can’t tell what’s happening or why. Their lives unravel and, more often than not, they are taught to blame themselves—or other victims.

I enjoyed an extended residency at The Huntington as an advanced graduate student, and I can’t speak more highly of the institution and its people. If you’re a graduate student who works on the American West, you should definitely apply for this.

BP is a wonderful place that is well worth the subscription price. I wanna add one more thing, though: BP has served as a non-traditional pathway into baseball for many talented writers, analysts, and scouts. Subscribing to BP gives you access to their analysis and ideas before they make it big.

The past couple of weeks have once again shown that more scholars and journalists need to read @kkdumez.bsky.social’s JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE.

Conspiratorial thinking has never been restricted to right-wing circles. Not historically, not now. As such, this “BlueAnon” phenomenon is not surprising.
