Alberta’s UCP government — also known for randomly turning into a semi-separatist party — is crushing and stomping on what was easily the most exciting city in Canada for housing reform.

Over 25 years my family of four has owned either one or zero cars, depending on the era. Under Smith's forced repeal of a 6-year old bylaw, if I were to redevelop my property I would be forced to add parking spots to it. Peeking out my window right now, I can see 10 empty public parking spots.

Premier NIMBY
Screenshot of an X post by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith (@ABDanielleSmith), dated October 8, 2026. The post says Albertans are frustrated when a neighbouring house is demolished and replaced by a 16-unit complex with no parking. It announces that Edmonton will return to pre-2024 density and height rules with minimum parking requirements, and that Calgary will keep its repeal of blanket rezoning. Both cities will review their bylaws. Attached are two graphics. The first shows a house beside a multi-unit building with the text “Responsible Infill: Protecting the Family Home.” The second, partly cut off, reads “Responsible Infill: Rolling Back Blanket Rezoning” with checkmarks for listening to Albertans, parking and water infrastructure considerations, and a full bylaw review.

Love that Edmontonians can elect councillors who support bike lanes and infill, only for the province to override them. We’re holding a separation referendum because the Premier won’t let anyone “silence the voices of hundreds of thousands of Albertans.” Unless they live in Edmonton, apparently.

Casually throwing away a decade of work, probably 10s of millions of dollars worth, and making Edmonton start from scratch. Stopping a building boom in its tracks too. Red tape reduction my ass.
Edmonton will be required to adopt rules for high-density infill development that revert to the parameters in place before its 2024 zoning changes for housing types, density and height, and to restore minimum on-site parking requirements in place before 2020. Edmonton will have three months from Oct. 8 to amend its bylaw.

The news today is disheartening, so channel that anger and email your representatives. Tell Danielle Smith to get her hands off Edmonton's affairs, and tell council to NOT comply and repeal the zoning bylaw Use our tool for a starter message 👇 www.growtogetheryeg.com/email-council #yeg #yegcc

The myth Alberta 'subsidizes' the rest of Canada is the most powerful meme in the separatist armoury. But it's utterly false. I show that most Albertans get more back from federal programs than they personally pay in federal taxes, for @thetyee.ca: thetyee.ca/Opinion/2026... #abpoli /2

Reasons to ride a bike: - Bikes are fast and get you places on time - Gives you a nice butt - Most energy efficient way to travel - Get to go whee the whole time - Virtually immune to traffic - The going whee thing, but again

I laughed out loud watching this. “We need to think about safety” [by not having bike lanes] 😂 #yegbike

For everyone who complains about how awful Edmonton is: the “horror” of having hundreds of kms of trails along the river valley and associated creeks. #yeg #Alberta

It would be nice if brand new infrastructure built just a few years ago would detect people on bikes waiting to cross without needing to attach rare earth magnets to said bike.
"Social media thread on a dark background. Top post from vegvalleylrt account (11 hours ago) with a TransEd logo and Follow button, stating 'Many intersections along the Valley Line use detection loops in order to know when a vehicle is present. Make sure you stop close enough to the stop line so you don't miss your turn for a green light.' with bus and traffic light emojis. Below is a reply from yeg.bike (10 hours ago) with a purple and yellow circular logo, saying 'It would be nice if these detected bikes in the areas that there is no cycling infrastructure.' with 7 likes. Further down is a nested reply from vegvalleylrt (10 hours ago, marked as Author) with a TransEd logo, responding '@yeg.bike you can try attaching a rare Earth magnet to your frame. The loops work based on electromagnetic fields and often a rare Earth magnet is enough to trigger the loop.' This reply has 4 likes."

NEW POST Edmonton's rowhome permits increased in the first half of 2026, despite a general slowdown in permits. Edmonton continues to provide strong proof that missing middle zoning changes can be the main character in the housing supply story. #yegcc www.jacobdawang.com/blog/2026/q2... 🧵

Canadian cities love to be like "we don't just need homes, we need the *right kind* of homes" and then simply ignore or refuse the reforms Edmonton did that are producing the ✨ right kind ✨ of homes
