People in DRC are facing multiple challenges at once. Overlapping outbreaks, including the #Ebola disease, increase pressure on exhausted communities and health services. We're calling for vital investments to be maintained across all emergencies so that no crisis is sidelined.

Respecting international humanitarian law can prevent suffering and save lives. All parties to conflict must respect the rules of war and do everything in their power to protect civilians and those not participating in hostilities from the devastating consequences of armed conflicts.
"Wars fought without rules transform wars between combatants into wars against civilians. We cannot succumb to a political culture that erases the lessons born out of world wars, out of the ashes of mass destruction and genocide.”

Armed conflict changes daily life in an instant, but it should never erase the limits that protect human life and dignity. The rules of war exist to reduce suffering. Humanity does not stop when wars begin.
International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules that seeks, for humanitarian reasons, to limit the effects of armed conflict. It protects persons who are not, or are no longer, directly or actively participating in hostilities, and imposes limits on the means and methods of warfare. IHL is also known as "the law of war" or "the law of armed conflict".

Seventy-seven years ago, states came together after the unprecedented destruction of the II WW to adopt the Geneva Conventions. But that promise to preserve humanity in war is eroding at an alarming pace. ICRC president on this anniversary of the Geneva Conventions: ms.spr.ly/63322aHoCC
In today’s interconnected world, no one is immune to the effects of war. As parties to the Geneva Conventions, states bear a unique responsibility to uphold these lifesaving rules. Doing so is a moral and strategic imperative that protects people both near and far from the frontlines. It is also foundational to global peace and prosperity. Changing course is still possible, but only if exceptional efforts are made now to strengthen respect for and commitment to international humanitarian law.”

Cities are not battlefields. They are homes, schools, hospitals and streets where families try to survive. When heavy explosive weapons are used in populated areas, the harm reaches far beyond the blast. Civilians must be protected.
When cities are bombed, shelled, hit by airstrikes, rockets, or artillery fire, it’s the civilians who suffer. Heavy explosive weapons shouldn't be used in cities.

In Al Obeid, in North Kordofan, communities are experiencing increasing hardship following a recent escalation of hostilities around the city, adding new pressure to an already fragile humanitarian situation. Many people have endured months of displacement, uncertainty and repeated disruptions to essential services, making it increasingly difficult to access safe water, healthcare and other basic needs. For families already struggling to cope with the consequences of the armed conflict, the loss of these critical services further deepens vulnerabilities and compounds daily challenges.

The DRC Red Cross plays an indispensable role in responding to armed conflict and public health emergencies across eastern DRC. To preserve a lifeline for the communities they serve, humanitarian personnel must be respected and protected. Acts of violence against them are strictly prohibited. Civilians cannot be targeted. Civilians cannot be used as human shields. Civilians must have safe passage to flee. Humanitarian organizations must have access to deliver aid to civilians.

We are heartbroken by the death of Ahmed Yaquob Osman, a volunteer from the Sudanese Red Crescent Society who was killed while supporting communities in El Obeid, North Kordofan State. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as to the Sudanese Red Crescent Society. This marks yet another tragic loss among our colleagues and fellow Sudanese humanitarian workers since last year. Each humanitarian worker killed is more than a statistic. Every death is a profound loss for a family, a community, and the humanitarian mission they served with courage and dedication. We must not allow these tragedies to become normalized. Humanitarian workers are members of the communities they serve, working tirelessly to provide protection, assistance, and hope, often at great personal risk. The continued loss of humanitarian workers is unacceptable. Weapon bearers must do all they can to ensure their safety and uphold the principles that enable humanitarian assistance to reach those who need it most.

Today, on International Nurses Day, we honour nurses around the world who dedicate their lives to care, humanity, and compassion. We also pay tribute to Florence Nightingale, whose devotion to the sick and wounded helped transform the nursing profession.
She helped establish modern nursing through new care practices and hospital reforms that improved patient care. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), Florence Nightingale worked in overcrowded military hospitals with high death rates. Created in her honour by the ICRC in 1912, the Florence Nightingale Medal is awarded every two years to nurses who have shown exceptional courage and dedication in caring for others. This award recognises those who work under difficult conditions to protect life, provide care, and preserve human dignity.
