it’s not lost on me that the private security guards hired to arm our JCC are all Black. It’s probably who is willing too in Kentucky, as well. I feel safe this way, too. Just coming back to say this in the wake of my friends pre schoolers almost getting bombed. What they risk isn’t lost on me.

Even before communism, life was dangerous for Jews in Eastern Europe. My great grandparents came to this country to escape the Pograms. Many Jews came here or went to Israel to escape the Pograms decades before the Holocaust. Jews have been slaughtered & persecuted for centuries in diaspora.

I would say a very small minority actually. the belief that this large number or it’s frequent is driving by no jewish bias, in my opinion. and that, subsequently, is being used to question or give passes to not take Jews seriously when discussing real problems.

if you want, a gentle suggestion to ask more question about your dad’s university research and collaboration. it was rare this happened if a) there wasn’t intel gathering/happening b) diplomatic elements to it. c) both. Poland was not a country one could just got to in 1974 as a US citizen.

to be honest, wasn’t our choice. they also took all our money and belongings. only allowed to take a suitcase and a dollar. it’s better this way though. I just hope I can very soon provide a life of relaxation for my mother and grandmother. they deserve rest.

we were in warsaw. My family was made stateless along with 50% of the remaining Jewish community in Poland between 1968-1970, still have family there (we came in 70). The KGB followed my family in the US for four years once coming here in 1970….I have stories….or “propaganda” to some.

as the daughter of a communist refugee I can confirm with one caveat - there was never anything new coming in and yes bread lines were VERY REAL. My family didn’t even have a fridge so fresh food was scarce. New clothes ? forget about it. fresh meat? put the live carp in the tub, nobody shower.
