Here’s another poem for National Poetry Day. This one is called ‘A Brief History of Modern Art in Poetry’.

A Brief History of Modern Art in Poetry

1. Impressionism
Roses sway in softened reds,
Violets swim in murky blues,
Sugar sparkles in the light,
Blurring into golden you.

2. Surrealism
Roses are melting,
Violets are too.
Ceci n’est pas le sucre.
Keith is a giant crab

3. Social Realism
Roses are dead,
Violence is rife.
Don’t sugar coat
This bitter life.

4. Abstract Expressionism
Are and.
Violets roses so.
You sweet blue.
Are are red is sugar

5. Pop Art
Roses go BLAM!
Violets go POW!
Sugar is COOL!
You are so WOW!

6. Conceptual Art
Roses are red,
Coated in blood:
A deer’s severed head
Drips from above

Meta have stolen the work of 1000s of writers to train their AI. All of my books were included in their illegal action. Today UK authors are protesting against this theft. Copyright law is clear: to use a creator’s copyrighted work, you need to get permission and agree payment. #DoTheWriteThing

Today, Susannah Hancock's independent review 'Delivering the best for girls in custody' was published. Read Chief Inspector Charlie Taylor's response below. ⬇️ Read the review: www.gov.uk/government/p... And the Government press release: www.gov.uk/government/n...

“Vulnerable girls need specialist provision. When we inspected HMYOI Wetherby in 2023, we found a lack of training and expertise that was failing to address very high levels of self-harm and putting girls, and the staff looking after them, at risk and creating further trauma. I am pleased that the government has acted on Susannah Hancock’s recommendation that girls should no longer be held in young offender institutions, and that a long-term plan will be developed to provide appropriate care that will address their complex needs.”

Today’s poem is called ‘Meeting Deadlines’.

Meeting Deadlines

I always meet my deadlines.
I don’t even have to try –
They sneak up on me from nowhere,
Tap my shoulder and say hi.

It’s you! I cry. So how are you?
I did not think you’d come so soon.
Can’t stop now but why don’t we meet
Next Tuesday afternoon?

Or, better still, two weeks from now?
My deadline shrugs and sighs.
A fortnight on, we meet again,
Much to my surprise.

Next up Prof Hannah Smithson who sounds a note of caution: we need to look at what’s really going on behind the positive data, such as the reduction in the number of children in prison and challenge ourselves about how much we are influencing change

Today’s poem is called ‘The Importance of the Oxford Comma’.

The Importance of the Oxford Comma

Owing to ambiguities caused by its omission,
the Oxford comma was the subject of a petition
raised by serious serialists keen to ensure
its mandatory use in lists of three things or more.

And what a response! From across every nation,
the signatures poured in beyond all expectation –
from the investment bankers, robbers and thieves,
to the politicians, self-servers and exponents of sleaze.

There were the Daily Mail readers, the clowns and deluded;
the climate change deniers, the daft and the stupid;
the morally bankrupt, Donald Trump and Piers Morgan;
Elon Musk, a Bond villain and a trafficker of organs;

plus the poets, the drug fiends and chronically poor –
all supported this change to grammatical law.
This formal petition was then presented in hope
to Sir David Attenborough, the King and the Pope.
